Peter Gelderblom

…has Got To Be Good on Zulu Records

Interview : Simon Tillotson

Having shot up the charts since its release on Zulu Records a fortnight ago, Peter Gelderblom & Randy Colle’s Bizarre Inc-influenced ‘Got To Be Good’ is currently dominating both the Beatport House and Main charts. With the track looking set to continue to do the damage and become a firm summer favourite, we caught up with Peter to find out more…

Hi Peter, first up and for those not in the know, what have the last 6 months seen you doing?

“Around 6 months ago I met Randy and from day one we had a kind of musical click. We’ve been in the studio almost every day (weekdays) and we made around 15 originals and remixes, almost all of which hit the Beatport Charts…and then we’re always playing at the weekend.”

We’ll get straight to the point – Got To Be Yours has just hit the top 50 on the Beatport main chart and top 10 on the house chart – did you expect to see the track do so well so quickly?!

“Yes 100%! I felt it straight away but I didn’t expect it to hit number 5 in the Beatport House top 100 so fast!”

Is there a story behind the track?

“Yeah hell yeah hahaha, I played those originals a zillion times in the 90s, that kinda feeling is coming back…more of a Deep House vibe.”

What’s the reaction been like both on and off the dance floor? Any supporters that stand out in particular?

“I received great reactions from almost everybody in the scene, DJs like Camillo Franco and Sander Kleinenberg to name a few but the reactions on the dancefloor are funny…On the one hand you’ve got the younger people who don’t know the sample (which isn’t a sample by the way) and on the other you have the people that danced to Bizarre Inc in the 90s, but either way, it always gets insane reactions.”

The use of the Bizarre inc. sample is something many people will instantly recognise – was this intentional or a happy accident?!

“No, I played that tune on high rotation because that was the true house sound of the 90ties – so it was a well thought production.”

You and Randy have produced plenty of records together – how does the production process work with the two of you?

“Well mostly on Monday we listen to new music, new releases, new promos, what’s buzzing and if we have an idea we listen to old music that I played in the past (disco, soul or early house) and we almost always find some ideas to work with from there… If we need vocals I’ll send them to my network of vocalists, if not we just use some samples. Randy is the engineer and I am more the “idea man” and the contact person to companies – together we make each other up to be the perfect combination.”

This isn’t your first track on Zulu – the label is getting bigger with every release, what’s it like working with the guys there?

“I’ve followed MDE since day 1, loved and supported their productions, Zulu Records means good quality house, so we might do production together (you never know.”

And finally, what else can we expect to see from you coming up in the next few months?

“A release on Hot Fingers, and I’ll do a Hot Fingers compilation around ADE2014, a release on Work Records (Spinnin Records), we are working on a new Zulu release, and ……I am writing a book about Dance music!”
