Ramiro Lopez

The Spanish superstar refusing to call a Truce on the dancefloor as he keeps on delivering

Interview by Dan Prince

Ramiro a huge welcome back to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you right now?

Hola! I´m in Madridejos right now, the village in Spain where I live. I’m sitting in my studio with a cup of tea.

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning after rolling out of bed?

May not be music in a usual way, but it was a Tibetan gongs recording I use for meditation.

We love that! We thought Sharam playing drum & bass to get out of bed was cool, but no, you win hands down. So exciting news for you this week with the release of your fabulous Truce EP on Carl Cox and Jon Rundell’s seminal imprint Intec. Please talk us through this three tracker…

Yes! The EP was released one week ago and I’m very happy about it.  We are having great feedback and doing good sales wise. I did 3 track with Techno, party and dancefloor reactions in mind and they worked amazing whenever I played them out. They are slightly harder than my first Intec EP, just the way I’m feeling in the studio right now.  It’s awesome to be part of the Intec family and you will see more of my music here for sure.

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend?

Luigi Madonna – Trust Me – Drumcode
It´s not a secret this label is one of my faves so Luigi is as well. The whole EP is gold, with this Madonna style. I played it last Saturday and it was super.

Jon Monkman, Pete Tong – The Bumps (Julian Jeweil remix) – Suara
Amazing techno remix here! Julian is totally on fire and I love his stuff.

Sasha Carassi – Dark Symphony – Octopus
Classy track, sounds really good, works even better.

Kaiserdisco – S3000 – KD Raw
Dark and mental vibes on this super track. I love Kaiserdisco and their label KD Raw.

Gabriel D´Or & Bordoy – Italia 90 –Selected
They just released their album “13” and It’s so good. I’ve been playing some of the tracks like “VAP “ Carbon13” and “13”. This was the last track of my set.

When was the last time you had a really good dance to a DJ?

Last Saturday with Uner, playing just after me. He did a very nice set.

One of the most important events on the dance music calendar is just around the corner, where can we catch you spinning at ADE next month in Amsterdam?

I will be playing at Suara’s party on 16th October at Panama Club along with some of the habitual kitties like Coyu, Tube & Berger, Dosem, Edu Imbernon, etc. and on the 17th at Dido Events with the Umek, Coyu, Dosem and 1605 crew.

For the thousands of people reading this around the world who have never been lucky enough to experience ADE, can you try and explain just why this event is so important for dance music…

It is one of the biggest reunions in the world for all the electronic music scene. Not just artists but agents, promoters, press, managers, etc. are there and people take advantage of this to have meetings with everybody from all around the world in the same city. A lot of the business for the next year is done there.  The conference panels are very interesting and you have parties at every club with top notch line ups during these days. And all of this in the beautiful city that is Amsterdam.

When was the last time you dropped Xpress 2 – Muzik Xpress?

I think it was in a party in the beginning of the summer. It’s a track that I always have in my bag, perfect to end a perfect night.

Ibiza has had a memorable season this year. The hottest, the busiest and probably the most musically diverse. What have been some of your best nights this summer?

Definitely my first time playing at Space Ibiza. It was magic to play on the terrace I’ve been dancing so many times in the past. Also the Intec Party with Jon Rundell and Cristian Varela at Blue Marlin. Great to team up with these two geniuses.

The island always comes in for some stick, we think it’s just lazy journalism when some scribe goes on about how the island is too VIP these days. The Ibiza underground is still there, you just gotta go seek it out. Thoughts?

I think the good thing in Ibiza is you can find everything. Of course there are many VIP places and in my opinion it’s ok if you’re looking for that but you can find so many different parties and artists and it’s fantastic to have so many options to choose from all within the same place.

Your tune of the summer?

Tiger Stripes – Brrr – Truesoul

One of the country’s that is really coming on leaps and bounds in recent years is India, a place you have just returned from. So tell us about it. How knowledgeable are the kids on the dancefloor – how upfront can you play?

The electronic lovers in India are growing and growing and it’s unbelievable how enthusiastic they are. I was amazed how many people came to my gigs knowing all my discography, asking me about specific works or just speaking about new wave of artists etc.

What was your tour highlight?

Every gig was off the hook but maybe the last one at Euriska in Pune was special because it was the last event, we were celebrating the success of the tour and I played a longer set.

Did you get the Indian squits?

Not at all, in fact I ate Indian food every day, tried local dishes in every city and really enjoyed it. I just chewed anise after every meal as they do there and my stomach was perfect. Indian food is amazing, so tasty, love it.

It’s your birthday – 3 DJs you invite to play?

Carl Cox
Adam Beyer
And then b2b2 with all my DJ friends

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

I’m working a lot and have a lot of new stuff coming up.  I have some specific goals I hope to reach soon. My next releases will be on Toolroom Trax and Octopus. Techno takeover!

The ‘Truce’ EP is out now on Intec…watch out for the new EP coming out on Toolroom Trax called ‘Easy Going’ in October…
