Randy Colle

More goodness from the track on everyone’s lips

Interview : Simon Tillotson

Having shot up the charts since its release on Zulu Records a fortnight ago, Peter Gelderblom & Randy Colle’s Bizarre Inc-influenced ‘Got To Be Good’ is currently dominating both the Beatport House and Main charts. With the track looking set to continue to do the damage and become a firm summer favourite, we caught up with Randy Colle to find out more…

You’re back to the Zulu fold with your sure to be anthem “Got To Be Good” – so go on… what’s so good about this new release?

“I think we did a very good remake of the hit from back in 1991. Everybody wants to play that track again but there was no playable version. Besides that, all the essential elements are in; catchy melodies, recognizable vocals and a big breakdown with a lot of energy in the drop.”

How does it work with you and Peter Gelderblom collaborate? Do you each have your own strengths? Do you always agree on how a track should be put together?

“Before we start we try to think about how the track should sound and which way we want to go, during the process we’re constantly throwing ideas to each other. Peter has been in the industry for 35 years so he’s got an immense network. My strengths are in the technical side of things and the engineering.”

What do you think are the benefits of collaborations?

“As my Father always says: two people know more than one.”

Are there any negatives?

“From my side there are no negatives at all…Before I met Peter I was just making music in my bedroom and now we are high in the Beatport house chart!”

What’s next in the pipeline for you?

“We’ve got many new tracks coming up; some huge remixes and really big collaborations…”

What is your big tune, besides this of course, that’s so far hit the streets of 2014?

“Full support for The Cube Guys – La Verite, I play it in every set!!”

What got you into production?

“I started as a DJ a long time ago and there was a certain moment that I wanted to play my own records so I started producing. In 2011 I started at the ‘Herman Brood Academy’, this a Dutch school for producers where I was taught by professionals from the Dutch dance scene. I was in the same class as Martin Garrix there.”

What’s your favourite bit of kit in the studio?

“Honestly, I don’t use much hardware from the studio. I only work with my Macbook and the software. My favourite plugins at the moment are the ZEBRA and DIVA by U-He, they’ve got an amazing sound!”

What would you like to have achieved by the end of 2014?

“There is no particular thing that I want to achieve by the end of 2014. Of course I have dreams for having my own night on Ibiza or something like but the main thing is making music and playing music for the people, when I can do that I’m a happy person.”

And finally, what can we expect from you and Peter next?!

“You can expect a lot of tracks on labels like Hotfingers and WORK (Spinnin). There are some big collaborations with great vocalists and we will be doing a lot of Peter Gelderblom & Randy Colle B2B gigs.”
