Reel People

Soulful, Deep and Dope – need we say more?

Reel People, a huge welcome to DMCWORLD towers – where on planet earth are you today?

Thanks very much! Well I’m enjoying the last strands of British Summer time by the beach in lovely Dorset.

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning after rolling out of bed?

The first piece of music I heard this morning was a new Reel People remix we just finished for Tony Momrelle’s song ‘Pick Me Up’. This is out soon on our label Reel People Music.

Congratulations on your excellent new Compilation ‘Soulful, Deep and Dope’, what’s the idea behind the new series?

The idea is to showcase our love for soulful music in all of its forms. This is a new series and we have some amazing music people involved to compile and create some great albums and unearth some real soulful gems from the likes of Ralf GUM, Omar, Gwen McCrae, Opolopo, Julian Gomes, Andreas Saag, MdCL, Joey Negro, MAW, The Layabouts, Frankie Feliciano, Tony Momrelle, Imaani, and Liquideep, among others.

There are a lot of tracks on the album, how did you go about making your selection?

Well with the digital era it allows you to select a wider range and amount of tracks unlike the CD era where your limited to time and space. Honestly I just selected a lot of the music that I’m feeling at the moment and also picked out a few golden oldies that might have been forgotten about.

You’re a busy man, producer, DJ and record label boss, what’s your favourite part of your job?

For me A&R and artist development gives me the most pleasure.

You’ve worked with a lot of fantastic artists over the years, what have been your highlights for the label so far?

I’ve been really fortunate to have worked with many amazing musicians over the years. The guy that stands out though is my good pal, Tony Momrelle. He is to me the complete artist and were all really excited about the release of his debut album on our label Reel People Music in early October.

If you could collaborate with a Jazz or Soul great (Alive or dead) on your next project, who would it be?

Wow…that’s a very difficult question as there are so many artists that have inspired me and the Reel People sound, but I always find myself pulled to the wonders of Stevie & Marvin.

We come round to your gaff and are looking through your tunes. Which record do you hide before we arrive?

Probably Kool & The Gang – Celebrate…it’s needed for all the Weddings & Barmitzvahs!!

What are your 5 big tunes of the moment?

In no particular order or genre…

Eli Escobar – Seein You

Zepherin Saint feat. Ann Nesby & 3G – Optimistic

Portia Monique – Never Give You Up (Joey Negro Extended Mix)

Tony Momrelle feat. Chantae Cann – Back Together Again (Richard Earnshaw Vocal Mix)

Real Deep feat. Jaidene Veda – You Got This (Real Deep Vocal Mix)

Biggest tune of the Summer?

Eli Escobar – Seein You

An up and coming producer to watch out for over the next 12 months?

A couple of producers I really dig right now, Eric Ericksson and also Eli Escobar!

The last GREAT album you listened to?

Tony Momrelle – Keep Pushing

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

I’m actually working on some new tracks with a US producer called Paris Toon and the legendary CeCe Peniston…watch this space!
