Sander Kleinenberg

The big man from the Dam getting up to some Wicked Things on Spinnin’

Interview by Dan Prince

Sander welcome back to DMCWORLD…where on planet earth are you today?

“Hey Dan – I am catching some breath between flights in Amsterdam at the moment, I’m going on a fairly extensive US tour tomorrow.”

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning after rolling out of bed?

“My remix for Halsey’s ‘Trouble’…mastering came back, always an exiting moment.”

So a great way to start the new year with a huge release. Please talk us through the sound and history of your Audio Bully’s collab ‘Wicked Things’ swinging our way on Spinnin’…

“I have done a lot of writing with Steve Dub in London over the last years and one of the ideas that came from these sessions involved a rather large sample from an iconic US rapper – but as we found the idea a little too urban, Steve suggested to reach out to his mate Simon (the only remaining member of Audio Bully’s) to lay down some of his iconic flows. I then took this session into a room in Amsterdam and wrote the bassline and beats. Spinnin loved it.”

Can you remember where you first road-tested the track…did you know you were sitting on something rather special?

“I tested the rough demo in Argentina about a year ago and it went off, the promoter kept asking me about this record in the months following…it kind of came together pretty smoothly after a few additions and I’m obviously happy with the result.”

You shot the video in New York. Couple of questions…how freakin’ cold was it and who was behind the shoot?

“I can’t even think about this weekend without feeling cold. The Director Jose Martinez literally had to talk us through a few of the moments…the wind chill on the Manhattan bridge was -20. Pretty cold!”

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend…

1. Halsey – Trouble (Sander Kleinenberg remix)

One of the biggest records I’ve done in a long time, a crazy talented vocalist and future superstar btw.

2. Roland Clark, Paul C & Paolo Martini – Take Some House (Riva Starr Edit)

Riva Starr is on a roll lately!!

3. Tokio Hotel Vs Cazzette – Love Who Loves You Back (Cazzette Remix)

Love Cazzette, very exciting young group.

4. Woo York – Odyssey – LIFE & DEATH

Very exciting EP from these techsters.

5. Sam Haas – Hours & Ours (Original Mix)

Very exciting and delirious house tune. lovely and original.

3 bucket list adventures you wanna do in your lifetime…

“Would love to visit Bhutan one day! I am pretty excited by the idea of converting an old canal house in a great home one day and making a bunch of kids with my wife, but first I have got to entertain a few clubs and festivals around the world…2.0 style.”

A celebrity you wouldn’t want to get stuck in a lift with?

“Solange Knowles…apparently!”

An up and coming producer we should be looking out for in 2015…

“Me.”

Your post in Facebook on February 1st…”It’s a rare free Sunday in my house trying to focus on the months ahead. It’s pretty rare to be able to freeze your life and look around for a minute, the comings years are going to be crazy and hectic but I feel a very blessed man to continue to do the one thing that I love so much, entertain you all with positivity and excitement.” What did you do on your rare day off?

“I was just consistently in awe on how a normal weekend felt like and realised once again there is a rather big sacrifice in giving up all your Fridays and Saturdays for this thing we love…of course I wouldn’t want it any other way though.”

What are your plans for Vegas and Ibiza this year?

“Rock it hard!”

A festival you cannot wait for this year…

“I always look forward to the Pacha Festival in Amsterdam, it’s the first festival of the season in Holland and it’s always a great vibe!”

Let’s skip forward 12 months. What is the 1 thing you want to achieve by this time next year?

“A big crossover record that represents the club on the radio in a positive way.”

The last GREAT studio toy you bought yourself?

“A pair of v-moda headphones.”

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

“A big summer record through Spinnin’ at the end of April and a great little tune through Revealed Records with Beauriche. Apart from that, the remix for Halsey will come out on Astralworks soon!”
