Sandy Rivera

The house master returns Banging out the dancefloor

Interview : Dan Prince

Sandy a very warm welcome back to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

“Hey Dan, I am home in Spain near Barcelona in my studio cranking away on another song.”

What was the first piece of music you heard today?

“Lil Louis – ‘Club Lonely’ Mash up by Marshall. I was starting to put together my next DJ mix, when I got a call from my manager Aaron to put the mix on hold and finish a song for one of his ADE meetings.”

Well young man you have done it again! Brought a piece of beauty to the house dancefloor with your new tune ‘BANG’…please talk us through the sound and history of this mesmerising track featuring April Morgan…

“Having worked on 4 previous records with April we’d built up a great relationship and creative energy…’Bang’ was something that was started with an organic beat and an acoustic guitar line, the verses came quite naturally but then we got stuck on the right hook. We decided to take a break…and I kept saying to April “the hook really needs to bang out”  – and then when we got that it all clicked into place!  But once we got the hook laid down we took another break but my son actually banged his head and we had to go to the hospital – so we had planned on working on the hook more but that stopped us from doing more – which could have been a blessing in disguise as we might have over done it!  – but on the Re-Vox mix we did actually end up going back in and recording some new parts…”

“What was I supposed to do when there was nothing but pressure and pain?

Where was I supposed go when all the roads lead me back to you again?”

…with your lyrics in mind, what is the song that always reminds you of having your heart broken? —

“It’s gotta be Adele “Someone Like You” – no one does heartbreak lyrics like her…she wrote the book on it…”

What can you tell us about the video…we loved the shoot in Estonia for ‘Fall For You’…

“’Fall For You’ was a fun video we made ourselves when we were in Estonia for a show, but the 9’Bang!’ video was a whole other story. We worked with a great production company called Kode Media, the Director Stu Birchall really captured the bitter-sweet tragic love story that we wanted to bring to life visually for this. We went to Ibiza for a 3 day shoot, the lead guy and girl had a crazy chemistry which comes across in the video and April performed like a true pro. Videos are so important for me so it’s great to have the chance to work with a team that shares this vision.”

You love Club Prive!! Why is this nightclub so special?

“I have played every two month’s at Prive for the past six years and have made some life long friends in Tallin. As a DJ it’s great cause you can play all kinds of House music during the night and build up. My last gig we filmed a new video for the ‘Bang!’ Dub and used a cool production company in Tallin – that video should really capture the spirit of why I love those parties at Prive so much.”

Producer wise…who has impressed you this year?

“There’s a few people really making some great music…Bontan, Audiojack, Hector Couto & Tom Flynn are few of them…and Sasha’s recent remixes of London Grammar and Kwabs have totally blown me away, great to see him smashing it with those.”

You thanked your Facebook fans today for all of the support and said you have so much planned for 2015. So, what have you in store for us next year…?

“Sooooo much!!!!! Tons of songs and tracks. I am reaching into a part of my productions in a way I never have before. I am known for making classics & songs that last. Since I produce and write songs, I have full control of my sound and anything I do. We got DeepVisionz coming back  focused on songs and Blackwiz is straight deep/techy club tracks.”

What is the biggest tune in your box this week?

“’BANG!’. Not just saying that cause it’s mine but before any promotion of the song was starting it was already doing damage in my sets.”

What can you tell us about the first DeepVisionz release of 2015…you teased us with the line ”I will kill this tune like I never did before…”

“And I am!!! It’s a soulful song with a great London singer called Kevin Mark Trail – he came to Barcelona and we hit the studio for 2 days and came out the other side with a classic…it’s that Kings of Tomorrow sound that the soulful house heads love, but it’s a timeless song that can cross genres and hopefully stand the test of time…I know, I know…I’m hyping it up and I haven’t even finished it yet…!!”

Best 3 DJ gigs of 2014?

“I played a crazy private event in the Maldives at the start of the year that was fun, then Carpe Diem Croatia was a memorable one and recently Golden Hall in Sao Paulo Brazil was nuts!”

And finally, the obvious question young man…do you need more bang in your life?

“Yes…always…but remember…BANG Safely!!!”
