Spinnin’ deliver again with the mighty Canadian duo and ‘Make Things Right’

Interview by Dan Prince

Hey guys welcome back to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

“Melbourne Australia!”

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning after falling out of bed?

“Horace Andy – Skylarking.”

A massive week for you with the release of your brand new single ‘Make Things Right’ swinging our way on Spinnin’ and featuring Oscar Nominated duo Tegan & Sara. Wow. Please talk us through the sound and history of the track…

“We met Tegan & Sara at a show we were playing in LA a few years ago through our friend Kerri. She told them they had to work with us and we were a little shy as we thought they were pretty great. But they were super cool and Tegan was like, “send me some music!”. So we did, and she ended up writing on everything we sent her. One of them ended up on their last album as “Drove Me Wild”, and one of them ended up as “Make Things Right”. We reworked the entire instrumental and created a new piece of music to fit the vocals, but we wanted to keep the indie-dance pop feeling of the demo and we’re really happy with the result and of course super excited to have a record with them.”

The press are obviously crazy over the track, a Canadian match made in heaven journalists are writing everywhere! Have these guys been on your radar for a while for a collab?

“We always liked them and when the opportunity came up, we just went for it and things worked out really nicely.”

The song pays tribute to those who have felt forgotten and left out, encouraging them to rise up and believe in themselves. It’s a strong message born out of positivity and hopefulness. Have you received any moving messages from your fans regarding the song?

“A lot of people have tweeted that the song makes them feel really uplifted and positive and is a super important message. A few people have messaged us saying that the song brings tears to their eyes! For us, as whatever people want to take from it is ok. It’s not ours anymore, it’s theirs.”

The track has been heavily supported by the likes of Avicii, Martin Garrix and Nicky Romero…who are some of the producers names you always check to see if they are there giving you the thumbs up on your new music?

Those guys are definitely massive and also very representative of the younger generation of electronic music lovers which is really important to us. We’re glad that the song connected with them.”

You gave Miami a big shout at on Sunday night, you were spinning at LIV and promising to road-test some new tunes. Let’s hear about these newbies…

We’ve been very busy this past winter in the studio working on new music. We have some house-tinged stuff that is reminiscent of our earlier techier music that we think DJ’s and fans of the new house sound will love. More to be heard on that soon…”

Miami Music Week is just around the corner, where can we catch you this time?

“At Alesso’s party at the SLS on Thursday; our own night Sultan + Shepard and friends at Eleven after hours on Friday; and Saturday at Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano’s pool party at the Shelbourne. It’ll be a busy week! We’re looking forward to it…”

What is more important for you as producers, a big Miami record or a big Ibiza anthem?

“That’s a tough one. Miami has a special place in our heart because we’ve been going there for about 12 years now and we remember the days of every DJ playing that one big record. But Ibiza is an incredible place and having an Ibiza anthem is every dance producer’s fantasy so we like them both.”

Have you any plans for Ibiza this summer?

“Not as of yet, but most likely we will find our way there at some point.”

What 1 record always reminds you of Miami?

“Oscar G – ‘Hypnotized’.”

2 bucket list adventures you wanna do in your lifetime?

“Go on Safari in Africa and drive across the US.”

What are the 5 big tracks in your box this weekend…

– Tom & Jame- Vandals

Super good groove, a little housey and a little electro.

– Nicky Romero & Vicetone- Let Me Feel (Fedde Le Grand Remix)

Love this remix. Fedde’s grooves always nail it.

– Hiio- Pump Up The House

Great bounce on this tune and has been big for us in the clubs.

– Galantis- Gold Dust (Hook N Sling Remix)

He just sent this to us and it’s awesome. Love the original too.

– Alex Adair- Make Me Feel Better (Don Diablo & Cid remix)

Great vibes.

The last time you pressed rewind on a track to listen to it again because it was damned good?

“The Avener- ‘Fade Out Lines’.”

An up and coming producer to watch out for in 2015?

“Hiio.”

What festival has really got you excited later this summer?

“Tomorroworld is always one of our favorites.”

Best ever festival experience?

“Mysteryland Chile. The crowd down there is so bananas. Still have goosebumps thinking about it.”

What is on a Sultan + Shepard rider in 2015?

“Moet Ice and 1942. Fruit Snacks. Water. Red Bull.”

An album we would be surprised to find in your collection?

“Pearl Jam – ‘Vitalogy’.”

What was the last GREAT studio toy you bought yourself?

A Wurlitzer!”

And finally,. let’s skip forward 12 months – what do you want to achieve in your life by this time 2016?

“Much more music out, maybe even an EP?! That and for everyone and their mother to know who Sultan+Shepard are.”
