Suyano

Hear the drummer get wicked! Are you Ready?

Interview by Dan Prince

Sjoerd welcome to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

“Hello DMCWORLD! I’m in Breda in the studio!”

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning after rolling out of bed?

“A new track I’m working on at the moment…”

Man oh man – what is it with the town of Breda. First we have Tiesto and then Hardwell, R3hab and yourself!!! It must be something in the water huh?

“Hahaha, that’s the number one question we always get. We have magical water here!”

Well an amazing start to 2015 with you a massive tune smashing into The Buzz Chart. Please talk us through the sound and history of ‘Ready’…

“Yes, thank you guys for ‘Ready’ in the Buzz Chart! Amazing! Gives me a lot of motivation! With this track I started with the build up, with the vocal ‘hands in the air’ pitched it from low to high with the soundshifter. Then I made the drop. I had such a cool sound. The drop is only one synth (with a lot of processing) and a bassline. The bassline is playing exactly the same notes as the melody. And of course drums and some FX. At last I made the break down, started with a pluck sound played in chords. Then I layered it with 5 other sounds.”

Okay let’s rewind for a moment. You started your music at an early age, you started hammering the drums when you were 8. Your neighbours must have loved you. What are your earliest memories of music growing up?

“Haha! Sometimes the neighbors went crazy, but most of the time they really liked it. Currently, I’m also learning to play the piano. My earliest memory is from when I was 4 years old and I got a keyboard for my birthday from my uncle and aunt. I played with the drum buttons on the keyboard non stop after that haha…”

When did you first come across dance music and who were the early producers who caught your attention?

“The first time was when I saw it on television. Tiësto’s older stuff, DJ Jean clubby records, things like that. Those tracks still make me go crazy haha…”

What did your family think of your choice of career?

“My parents are supporting me 100%. They see it is my dream and passion. Dan, how many people get the chance to follow their dream?”

Your DJ sets go further than turntables and a mixer…you make your sets a live experience incorporating a drumpad. It is fair to say you are one of the most energetic producers when up on stage! Why did you choose this route?

“Well everybody can play some tunes. But not everybody can play the drums! It gives my sets a unique twist!”

What are the big tunes in your box this weekend…

1. Suyano – Ready

Goes off at every gig I played so far!

2. Headhunterz – Once Again

The energy in this track is sick!)

3. Dash Berlin & John Dahlback – Never Let You Go (Reez Remix)

Watch these guys, they’re gonna blow up soon

4. Galantis – Gold Dust

Goosebumps from the vocal

5. Tujamo & Jacob Plant – All Night

Cool club track!

6. Ummet Ozcan – Kensei

Energetic drop, maximal crazy sound!

You teased us on Facebook last week telling us you had just finished two tracks with the crazy Reez boys. Tell us more…

“Last Friday we did a studio session and made two huge tracks!! Can’t wait to show you!”

So tell us about life in Breda. Do all of you DJs hang out together if you are in town…is there a pub or bar you all hang in swapping tales of excess on the road?

“Most of the guys are almost always on the road. But there was a time last year when I played in the church of Breda, together with Hardwell, Dannic etc. Then we meet up, party together and have fun. And sometimes when Hardwell is in town he takes some friends with him to the bar. Last time he was with Afrojack and Martin Garrix.”

An album in your collection we would be surprised to find…

“I really love R&B music and love to listen to it in the car. Trey Songz, Chris Brown…

An up and coming producer to watch out for this year…

“REEZ. I’ve heard some tunes from them. So cool!”

A DJ date in 2015 you just cannot wait for…

“The whole month of May. Touring in China for the third time! Love it there!”

Not many people know this, but Suyano is really good at…

“Playing the game ‘RISK’.”

What other studio releases have you got coming up?

“I’ve finished a few tracks, but can’t tell you too much about it yet.”

The last GREAT studio toy you bought yourself?

“The Spire! Great synthesizer!”

What do you think sets Suyano apart from your competition as a producer? What makes a Suyano track great?

“A Suyano track needs to have a good driving energy! Plus, I always use live drum fills in my tracks.”

Where have some of the brilliant DJ gigs been recently?

“In China, Austria, Czech Republic and Breda!”

Dude what is it with you and China? They love you there!!!

“Hahah, I don’t know! The people there are so warm! Love going there!!”

And finally gotta ask…what’s with the name?

“S is from Sjoerd (my real name).

Y is from my last name (Ypelaar).

And all the other letters are just random!”
