Getting set to rock Diynamic Outdoor in Ibiza with a new album done and dusted

Interview by Dan Prince

Charles welcome to DMCWORLD, where on the planet are you today?

“Currently I am in the South of France to finish my album. It is a very quiet place in the mountains, but also not too far from the beach. Beautiful, picturesque landscape. Very inspiring.”

A great summer for you so far with dates everywhere. But let’s kick off with your new tune which many are claiming to be the biggest tune of the summer! Please talk us through the sound and history of ‘The Real Thing’…

“It all started last year in October when I was looking for a talented singer for my album stuff. Mahfoud called me and wanted to collaborate. Since then he sang on several of my tracks. It sounded totally different to everything I have done so far. I was a bit skeptical at first because I didn’t know if people will like the new sound. But in the end it all worked out and I am glad I was able to do an EP on Diynamic Music.”

The track comes complete with two excellent remixes courtesy of Stimming and Adriatique…why were these producers in particular chosen, and what was your take on their reworks…?

“We thought that a Stimming Remix might be very interesting for the EP, a good contrast if you like. Adriatique of course because we have been good friends for a very long time now. I knew they would do well on it.”

Your journey into the world of dance music began with a journey to the 3001 Club in Dusseldorf. Can you remember your first thoughts on beholding this spectacle and the sounds?

“I was astonished. I couldn’t really understand what was happening in this moment. I just knew that I wanted to hear more of this kind of music.”

Artists on your radar in the beginning were more commercial, people like Ferry Corsten. How did you move into the more underground side of things?

“After some time of clubbing I started going to different clubs, in a different scene, which were more underground than the ones I visited before. For example “Harpune” from Düsseldorf. Over there it all started for me with underground music. I liked it more than the commercial stuff in the 3001 Club.”

Unlike most other artists, you began producing first, then started to DJ. Did you find it easy mastering the ones and twos?

“No, in retrospective this was never the easy way, but I always felt more like producing sounds than playing tracks. But of course I love DJing very much!”

I love DJing, but a live set is more emotional.” Discuss…

“For myself I think a live set is something straight from yourself. Something which is 100% pure. This was always my goal: to deliver my very own music to the people. Straight from the heart and soul…“

What are the big 5 records in your box right now?

– Adriatique – Rollox

– Laura Jones – Bright Lights (Cassy Remix)

– Jamie Lie A Kwie – Praw Emit

– Few Nolder – Chall

– Matthew Dekay – Patience Please

A recent quote from a certain superstar DJ…“I believe true DJing is actually an art, but it’s a dying art, as everyone is pushing the sync button…it’s a real shame when you see a ‘DJ’ plug his laptop in and call this DJing. Music will always evolve but sometimes not in the best way.” What are your thoughts on that?

“I don’t think it’s a shame to play with a laptop. A lot of young people for example don’t have enough money to pay for expensive DJ-Equipment. It makes the art more accessible to everyone who wants to participate. I think that everybody who wants to do music should have the right to do so. But I have to say that in certain points I agree. DJing is actually an art and one should always invest time in beat matching tracks to really understand how this music works. The real feeling about DJing is not about a sync button. When you are on the decks, what will you do after hitting it??”

What is the record that…

…reminds you of your childhood?

REM – Night Swimming

…always get you dancing?

Minilogue – Hitchikers Choice

…reminds you of being broken hearted?

Coldplay – Yellow

…you wish you would have made?

Herbie Hancock – Cantalopue Island

We were mashing it up at Cova Santa in Ibiza last week for the Diynamic Outdoor party…when will be your debut performance there and how do you feel about it?

“I am really excited to play there. I will play there on Thursday the 28th of August, so this week. Looked amazing on the pictures so far.”

This is your 3rd year on the annual, we remember you making your debut at Sankeys! Has the island changed since then?

“Well what I could realize in this short time is that a lot of people are now coming to the island to do their own showcases and parties. I am not quite sure if this a positive development.”

What are 3 reasons you love Ibiza?

“Good weather, good music and people.”

Who is the last GREAT young DJ/producer you have spotted around the world?

“I got to know the band Son Lux. They are very young and come from England. The music they are doing is simply mind blowing. Very musical and still electronical. I love them.”

You once said in an interview that it was difficult to become part of the Diynamic team…why is that, is it because only the best will do for them?

“No, it’s not about being the best. It was a long process of trust and loyalty. That’s why it took so long. The group as it is now is very balanced and that’s what is most important to everyone. Everybody feels part of one great thing. I am very happy to be there.”

What is the last studio toy you bought yourself?

“Nord Lead 4!!!”

The last non dance music album you checked out?

“Son Lux – Alternate Worlds“.

It’s that time of year again, the annual DJ Top100. I interviewed Arthur Baker this week, he remarked…“there are too many DJs and genres for a realistic competition”. What are your thoughts on that?

“I agree. Suddenly there are tons of producers and musicians out there, that makes the competition very tough. But I also think that good music will always find its way to the people.”

In your opinion, is it possible for someone to make it as a DJ in 2014, without any production behind them?

“No. This time is over. Everybody can “DJ” now. You have to generate attention through your productions. If you are a producer now, sit down and try to get yourself into producing. It’s the most effective way to get your self heard.”

And finally, you are renowned for loving real music. Please talk us through the sound of your forthcoming album and when it will be out…

“As I mentioned before, I have  just finished my album in Southern France. It is a very quiet album, something to listen at home, very emotional and deeply rooted within my own musical experience. It has some rhythmic parts in it and this gives a good contrast to the rest of the tracks. A very diverse record. I am very excited about the feedback of the people. It will be out end 2014.”
