Tom & Jame

The Big Shots from The Netherlands Revealing all in Miami. Massive tune alert

Interview by Dan Prince

Thomas, Jaime welcome to DMCWORLD!! Where in the world are you today?

Thanks! Great to be interviewed by you guys! We are right now in Amsterdam working on new projects!

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning after crawling out of bed?

That was Calvin Harris & R3hab – Burnin For Us. We were listening to it during breakfast. For us one of the biggest dancefloor bangers out this year.

Well a blistering start to 2015 and straight into The Buzz Chart with your Dannic & Shermanology ‘Wait For You’ remix. Please talk us through how you approached the rework…

Yes, really cool to see it do so well in several charts! When Dannic asked us if we wanted to do a remix, we immediately said yes. Loved the original, but it didn’t really fit into our own sets. So our approach was to respect the original version, but give it a totally different feeling. Its funny, the drop actually started out as a joke. We were just jamming some melodies on a Friday night and having a laugh about it, because it was a Moombah track we made. But the next day we changed tempos, and it inspired us to this groovy, but hard hitting drop that came out in the end.

When I told head of The Buzz Chart Guy Garret I was interviewing you today he shouted… “we love Tom & Jame – some great tracks on Spinnin and Revealed recently and are looking good to be the new hot players on the main stage!” – thoughts on that little comment…?

To hear that is always really awesome! For us it’s a great feeling to have a lot of people enjoying our tracks and the fact that people see us on main stages soon only keeps us motivated. Cause those main stages are definitely on our goal-list!

Jaime you hail from the historic town of Wageningen in central Netherlands. That’s where Lisa Hordijk comes from, the girl who won one of your X-Factor shows I do believe. I trust though that you are now the most famous resident from the town!!???

Actually we have some more famous people in Wageningen. Julian Calor, who’s a good friend of mine. He also lives in Wageningen. But also the Dutch Minister of Finance, Mr. Dijsselbloem lives here. But he is not really one of our competitors I guess haha.

Tom your home town of Oosterhout is even worth for famous people. The rapper Extince is from there, man oh man…he did The Milkshake Rap right? Is he a friend??

Haha, yes, we have some famous people around here. Of course every DJ from Breda (Oosterhout is right next to Breda), but Oosterhout also has its own talents like Extince. And also Fedde Le Grand’s label Flamingo Records is based in Oosterhout. Haha I’m not friends with Extince though. I have never met him!

So let’s rewind. How did you two first meet and when did the idea of a production duo start to form in your minds?

We met like 4 years ago, actually through a friend of ours. We were both producing at that time and decided to do a track together. That one track lead into 4 tracks and one day we decided to do a gig b2b. Then we realized we complimented each other not only in the studio but also on stage.

What did your families think of your career choice?

They are very supportive since the beginning. But ever since we won the “Dancetour Breda” competition in 2013 and played for a crowd of 20.000 people, they started taking our music a lot more serious. That’s really cool, cause their opinion is important to us. They really support us and they’re our biggest fans.

Who were the early producers that first caught your attention?

The first producers that we followed back in the days where Crookers, Spencer & Hill, Bart B More and Fedde Le Grand.

What are the big 5 tunes in your box this weekend…

> Dannic & Shermanology – Wait For You (Tom & Jame Remix)  – It’s been released last Friday and it is a record that really shows our love for dirty electro sounds as well as groovy melodies.

> Wolfgang Gartner  – Unholy (Cobra Effect Remix) – Love what they’ve done to the original. Pretty damn original stuff.

> Tom & Jame – ID  – To be released on Revealed pretty soon. Really proud of it, it works perfect in the clubs.

> Will K, Gazzo – Forth & Back (Tom & Jame Remix) – Super proud of this remix, had so many great reactions and Hardwell is playing it in his United We Are concert tour!

> Calvin Harris – Blame (Tom & Jame Remix) – cause its still a solid piece in our sets and its just too cool to see people reactions on the floor.

Tell us about your Club Academy Tutorials…

Our fan base is based on a lot of young producers and we wanted to give something back to them, share the experience we have build over the years. In the tutorials it’s important for us to give lots of quick tips, but next to that we want to show people how we work in the studio. I think the fun we have in the studio reflects in the tutorials. Next to the tutorials we’re going to introduce a new aspect which will be Club Academy Live. The first episode will be online very soon!

A producer we should be looking out for in 2015?

We think that Holl & Rush are putting out quality stuff lately.

The last great studio toy you bought yourselves?

We actually work in the box pretty much. Last plugin we bought was Nexus, but we actually don’t really use it that much. We are planning on buying ourselves some new monitor speakers soon.

What do you think is each other’s greatest quality as a producer?

We compliment each other on different aspects of producing. There’s some things Jame does better and some things Tom does better…That’s why we are always in the studio together these days.

An album in your collection we would be surprised to find?

Haha, probably the album Toonage by The Cartoons (2010). Just don’t even bother checking it hahaha…

Not many people know this, but Tom & Jame are really good at…

Making sarcastic jokes. Problem is, some people get the sarcasm, some people think we are very serious. That’s always hilarious for us.

It’s your birthday and you can invite 3 DJs to come and play at your party. Who do you ask?

Only for the DJ aspect, we’d invite Jack U, Dannic and a Dutch DJ called “FeestDjRuud”, check him out on YouTube he’s crazy.

A person from history you would like to have a beer with?

With Gerard Adriaan Heineken, just moments after he brewed his first Heineken beer

A date in your DJ diary you are really looking forward to…

A lot of dates actually. We will be playing in India, in Surinam (South America), we will be visiting WMC Miami in March and for this summer a lot of cool festivals have been confirmed.

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

The new single ‘Big Shot’ is coming pretty soon on Revealed Records. After that there’s some really cool collaborations and singles to come.
