Trade – The Grand Finale

DJ Pagano looks back at a club that was always pushing the boundaries

How are you feeling about this event being the FINAL one?

I am certainly not happy about it! Trade has always been one of my favourite London’s club-nights and one of those few events pushing the boundaries when it comes to music. You can hear the influence of its main floor music policy in every single one of my DJ sets. It’s a legacy that I will try to keep alive for as long as I DJ.

Who is your greatest DJ hero from Trade and why?

I have always been a big fan of Malcolm Duffy’s DJ sets. Long before becoming a Trade DJ (and before Shazam) I used to pester Malcolm for titles at the end of his DJ sets. I remember on one occasion when I asked him for a title, he reached out for his records bag, pulled out a vinyl and gave it to me saying he had two copies and wanted me to have one. A talented DJ but also a passionate and generous man who enjoyed sharing the music he liked with his fans. However when it comes to Trade DJ productions my heroes are definitely The Sharp Boys’ with their infamous “Sharp Tools”: some of the fiercest and most uplifting grooves that I have ever heard!

If you could invite any star to Trade for THE FINAL who would it be and why?

I really wished Tony De Vit was still alive to play at this final party…

What is your most embarrassing Trade moment?

Losing it on Turnmills’ main floor and losing the friends I came with.

What made Trade so unique?

The cutting-edge beats, the hedonism…it was all an incredible mix of things that created an adventurous and liberating experience.

All time Trade 25 Top 3

01: ‘ Just Come’ – Cool Jack

A legendary early 90s House track from the Italian Visnadi brothers that was huge from Ibiza to London.

02: ‘AC/DC’ – X-Press 2

A great groove! The breaks really remind me of the craziness of Muscle Alley…

03: ‘Flowtation’ – Vincent De Moor

Probably one of my favourite Hard-House records of the mid-90s and one epic journey
