Gearing up for the Ultra Music Festival with the huge Official Anthem – ‘Follow Me’

Interview by Dan Prince

Ruben, Victor welcome back to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you right now? //

“Hey DMCWORLD. We’re currently in Los Angeles, working in our studios on a lot of new music!”

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning?

“A new remix we’re doing for a really big artist. It’s almost finished!”

A massive Saturday night for you at the weekend with your new Drai’s residency in Sin City. How did your Las Vegas adventure go?

“We always love playing in Vegas and Drai’s is an amazing experience. It’s really one of a kind, playing on the rooftop and seeing the view – we can’t wait to go back!”

Are you producers who avoid the gaming tables in Vegas or do you have a dabble?

“Other then a poker sit’n’go every once in a while, we never really gamble in Vegas.”

A really exciting time for you at the moment due to the release of your new single – please talk us through the sound and history of the official Ultra Music Festival anthem ‘Follow Me’…

“We started with the chords, and the melody and main sound came very quickly after that. The whole track was a breeze to make – it all felt very natural. Then we booked a session with JHart, who recorded this amazing hook, and we knew instantly that this was the perfect vocal for the track.”

Can you recall where you first roadtested the track – did you know you were sitting on something very special?

“We actually roadtested it for the first time in Vegas last weekend and it sounded amazing. The crowd reaction was great and we’re happy to see it doing so well.”

An album in your collection we’d be surprised to find?

“Victor was a pretty big fan of Justin Timberlake and Ruben has four Eminem albums from more than 10 years ago. We still play songs from those albums sometimes for nostalgic reasons.”

3 bucket list adventures you wanna do in your lifetime…

“Skydiving, bungee jumping and experiencing zero gravity.”

When was the last time you pressed rewind and listened to a track over again because it was so damned good?

“Duke Dumont – ‘I Got U’. It sadly didn’t win a Grammy, but we really love that track. It’s so damn catchy.”

A festival/event in your 2015 diary that you just cannot wait for?

“Ultra Music Festival 2015 of course!”

You are known for searching out new plugins that are not really well known. What are your latest studio purchases?

“We recently got a pair of the new Genelec 8351a studio speakers, and they sound absolutely amazing. We’ve been a fan of the Genelec sound for years – and these speakers definitely live up to it’s reputation.”

True or false? Your name Vicetone has nothing to do with Victor’s name, it’s just two words you really love pushed together?

“This is actually true! We wish we had a cooler story…”

How important is working next each other every day? Some production duos work separately…

“We do a healthy mix of both. Working solo on seperate projects helps getting more tracks done, while working on the same project together helps with the big decisions as far as mixing and arrangement goes. So we do it differently every day, and the mix of this is also what makes it so fun working together as a duo.”

What do you think is each other’s finest qualities as a producer?

“Victor has a good ear for chords and arrangement, Ruben has a good ear for melodies and technical mixing. But we both do a mix of everything though – that’s what makes it the most fun.”

What has been more of an influence on your style of music – your home town of Groningen or  the internet?

“Definitely the internet.”

And finally…what is coming out next from you studio wise?

“Hopefully this new remix we’ve been working on, plus a collab with a big artist and a new vocal single. We can’t wait to unleash all this new music we’ve been sitting on!”
