The Zzub Chart

21st September 2012 – Footprintz have got plenty to get mouthy about.

1 (3) FOOTPRINTZ – DANGERS OF THE MOUTH – VISIONQUEST

A big fat pulsing song of electronic psychedelic wizardry that is set to blow your mind and float your boat. Footprintz could be Montreal’s answer to MGMT. Tiga delivers an epic carefully constructed, intricate and very funky Balearic remix, set to warp factor 10 complimenting the song beautifully. Jimmy Edgar also shakes the rump to the funk in a sort of Bladerunner goes post Paisley Park style. http://youtu.be/6hZEB4d6yMk

3 (1) HOT CHIP – HOW DO YOU DO – DOMINO

Another great single from their much lauded LP In Our Heads. Norway’s Todd Terje is up first on the remix front delivering 9 minutes of quality housey doings and a nice cool vibe. Mickey Moonlight goes on a funky percussive disco tip with a bit of a scuzzy New York feel, and Hot Chip’s very own Joe Goddard serves up a twisted pumped up dub. Phew! 7 (12) SASSE – TOOK MY LOVE Ft. BIG BULLY – MY FAVORITE ROBOT

Old school house that has got a classic D.J. International / Chicago Trax feel, especially Sasse’s Detroit Mix which features those back in the day cow bells alongside Big Bully’s vocals, transporting you back to ecstatic times in a sweaty strobe lit and smoke filled basements. Superb.

Eric San aka Kid Koala finally got the machine of his childhood dreams, an SP-1200 Sampler, the legendary piece of kit used by hip hop royalty. So in a flash of inspiration he went back to basics, which turned out to be the blues, after three days of cutting up, reassembling, multi tracking and getting creative, this raw and spine tingling labour of love was in the bag. You can almost feel the dust and haze. http://youtu.be/Bihh-irzmn0

Trashy West Coast punk pop where The Ramones meet The Beach Boys in an amphetamine fuelled twisting competition in a pool near Sheffield city centre. Bournemouth outfit that are causing quite a stir. Their debut LP veers off in all manner of directions but also has a constant intricate refreshing psychedelic core, that doesn’t keep referring to the past and from which anything is possible. Onwards & upwards. http://youtu.be/zWrhB6jE7qs

16 (22) SEAMING – SEAMING – THE STATE 51 CONSPIRACY

Stunning debut LP that is original in every sense, taking you to places you’ve never been before. Her unique voice and other worldly musical arrangements create a sense wide eyed magical wonder, if Tim Burton was a composer he might come up with something like this. Seaming To is going to be a star for all the right reasons she has got an outstanding talent. http://youtu.be/5ZXAdkrQhM0

17 (21) AUDIOJACK – THESE DAYS EP – GRUUV

A whinge about the digital revolution and how everyone is recording but there is no quality control, and the on going downward spiral of if you throw enough shit some of it will stick. It’s a sad state of affairs but kids today expect music for free, is that why most of today’s hits are throwaway or is that the fault of cheap TV and the cult of talentless celebrity. Who took the art out of the pop chart?

18 (28) THIS MANY BOYFRIENDS – THIS MANY BOYFRIENDS – ANGULAR RECORDING CORPORATION

Four piece from Leeds that do exceedingly catchy and melodic ramshackle punk rock pop with great lyrics “I don’t like you ‘cos you don’t like The Pastels” bringing Orange Juice, The Smiths and wearing badges to mind. http://youtu.be/amVQhRHAlTk

19 (26) DAN LE SAC FT. MERZ – LONG NIGHT OF LIFE – SUNDAY BEST

20 (23) MOLINER – YELLOW RIGHTS EP – DEPAART

Deep house Madrid style with creative use of the spoken word vocal. The title cut takes an empowering preacher route, whilst the flip Emilia gets blissed out and stoned. Nice.

21 (18) GENO WASHINGTON & THE RAM JAM BAND – HOLDIN’ ON WITH –

ACID JAZZ

Another corker in the Rare Mod series. Four tracks recorded in early 1968 and not heard since, serving up soulful psychedelics with an in with the in crowd knowing basement feel. It’s time to smoke loads and get misty eyed.

22 (15) LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES & DIMITRI FROM PARIS – GLAD TO KNOW YOU – GOMMA

A good times cover of the 1982 Chaz Jankel hit with some classic D Train riffs thrown in for added pleasure. Ray Mang serves up an 11 minute Flying Dub that has got Balearic classic written all over it, the Jean-Paul Gaultier frocks and Paul Smith flowered shirts revival starts here.

The first single to be lifted from the Bristol based electronic producer’s debut LP Spiderwebbed, is a hazy sunshine on morning dew ethereal affair with ghostly swirling vocals that have got a bit of a Liz Frasier feel about them. Mushrooms anyone? http://youtu.be/SiAOmkqgIhU

24 (24) BENEDICT – WE_CTRL (2) – WE_CTRL

The opening cut Why Don’t You Finish With Me is classy deepness that evolves with subtle changes and clever use of a vocal sample, plus it comes with a rich textured mix from Fulbert.

25 (NEW) DJ STEEF – THE PRELIMINARY EP – TOY TONICS

No less than six new tracks of house that edge towards the deeper side. The opening Venusian Missing features a hooky disco jazz funk falsetto vocal. Fomo Men follows in a heads down no nonsense tracky style, before Nocturne transports us into a funky future. More Lifes gets the pulses racing again, while Angels Behind The Bar is a chunky space jazz tinged number, and the closing Fleche has got a certain 90’s club feel about it. More like an LP than an EP.

Three lush deep cuts with just the right amount of twist, as slightly spaced velvet tones glide over and around warm bass lines with padded house rhythms. Quality.
