Electric Elephant is the Croatian boutique festival run by the team behind Manchester’s legendary Electric Chair club. The second annual event is due to take place from 28 to 30 August 2009, with a stellar line-up of DJs and live acts.
Headlining is the incredible Four Tet. They’ll be joined, over the course of three blissful days, by Natty, She Keeps Bees, Beth Jeans Houghton, David Thomas Broughton, Nancy Wallace, Emily Barker, One Little Plane, Sam And The Plants, Denis Jones, Superimposers and Magpahi. It’s a truly international line-up with something to suit all tastes, from the gently folky to the big and euphoric.
Not to be outdone, the DJ line-up is shaping up to be unmissable too. Headed by the phenomenal Andrew Weatherall, the festival’s dancefloors will also see sunkissed and moonlit sets from Jesse Rose, Theo Parrish (oki-ni.com party), Unabombers, Joakim, Daniele Baldelli, Phoreski (oki-ni.com party), Motor City Drum Ensemble, Bullion, Soul Jazz Soundsystem, Horse Meat Disco, Idjut Boys, Disco Bloodbath, Andy Votel & Dom Thomas, Lowlife: Bill Brewster, Frank Broughton, Matthew Burgess, Michael Cook, Aficionado: Moonboots & Jason Boardman, Bad Passion Project (oki-ni.com party), Basement Boogaloo: Nick Shaw & Ed Cotton, Emma (Chibuku), Dave Walker (Electriks), Pablo (Downtown Sounds), Andy Peek (C’mon Feet) tothebone, External Sounds, El Tomo & Nic Keane (Fatty Fatty), Billy Scurry, Rob Butler (Piccadilly Records), Benway, Matt Ward (Detroit Public Radio) and Pavel Pastik (Diskko,Ukraine). It’s the kind of mouth-wateringly eclectic line-up that made Electric Chair such a well-loved institution, and makes Electric Elephant an unmissable Eurofest.
The aim of this year’s festival is to be bigger and better than last year’s event, but to keep the intimacy that made it so special. The organisers have capped tickets at 2000 to make sure that happens. “It’s about being inclusive but minus all the claptrap of generic money making events that have no soul and no toilets,” they say.
In the spirit of expansion, the festival will now have opening and closing parties on the Thursday and Monday, and following on from the success of last year’s boat parties, there’ll be twice as many water-borne adventures this year, including the newly devised folk boat.
All this for a recession-busting £69.99 ticket.
The first festival had The Guardian proclaiming that “The Adriatic is the new Balearic.” We’re inclined to agree with them. Petrcane itself is a heavenly, 900 year-old fishing village with a forested coastline on the Adriatic Sea. The festival promises great weather, great restaurants and plenty of fresh fish, fruit and local wine. “It’s a beautiful place,” say the organisers. “It’s enchanting… You’ll fall in love.”
