The Best of 2012

The Tunes

Forever This (Sneak ‘Forever’ Remix), Fries & Bridges

Such a feel good vibe that samples the addictive guitar riff from Jerry Butler’s soul classic “Whatever’s Fair” and builds and builds and builds before bringing a smile to your face when the amazing, soaring vocal hits you right between the eyes.  This is what house music is all about

Satisfied, Noir

I really can’t decide if I like the Original Mix (tough and banging) or the House Vocal Mix (funked up and mellow).  I suppose it depends what mood I’m in… or rather what mood my audience are in… or maybe which mood I want to be in… or want my audience to be in.  Whatever version I choose, each one is deliciously addictive with nods to the early 90s.  Both versions have glorious riffs and a fabulous sampled vocal.  Massive, whichever version you choose.   Or I choose

Physical, NiCe7

It was a close thing between this and NiCe7’s glorious “Space Needle” but this just edges it with it’s haunting, filtered, looped vocal sample that gets under your skin.  The deep, chunky groove is utterly irresistible and practically demands that you dance.  Or at least nod your head, shuffle your shoulders and tap your feet whilst sitting at your laptop typing.  Which is exactly what I’m doing now.  Immense!

The Festival

The Vocal Booth Weekender, Spain

Amazing setting, cool people and music with real soul.  Unbelievable and not a muddy field in sight

The Club

Sankeys, Manchester

The Haçienda held it’s 30th Birthday party there and it was as close as being at The Haçienda as you could probably get.  If you don’t believe me, get yourself down to Sankeys on 27th December for the Haçienda 30 Christmas party where I’ll be DJing in the main room for seven hours.  At least!

The Producer

Joey Negro

Dave Lee continues to consistently produce amazing music.  His Sunburst Band album “The Secret Life Of Us” is unbelievably good and unlike the majority of dance music producers who are just clever programmers, he works with real musicians and vocalists and gets outstanding results.  His remixes are just that too.  Proper remixes.  Long may he continue to fly the UK house, disco, soul and funk flag

The Hero

It has to be my favourite DJ of all time, the legendary Frankie Knuckles.  His recent set at the Haçienda 30 party in Leeds was superb.  A massive influence in my early career, he continues to impress with his smooth style and epic choice of tunes.  A true master at work

The Breakthrough Artist

Totally Enourmous Extinct Dinosaurs all day long.  How fabulous is the debut album “Trouble”?  Huge

The Prediction For 2013

The mighty Aberdeen FC will be back in Europe and will almost win the SPL title
