Hyte Ibiza Opening

HYTE 2016 Opening at Amnesia, Ibiza

Words by Emma Gillett

Last summer HYTE landed in Ibiza, knocked on the door of Amnesia and did the unthinkable. Slotting their techno party in-between two other techno nights, Cocoon and Music On, and on the same night as Jamie Jones’ increasingly popular Paradise party. Not a small feat, but then again HYTE is a world-renowned party brand and locked in big names to attract hungry beat chasers all season long.

Back for its second year, HYTE officially opened on Wednesday. At 1am the queue was already enormous, made up of 20-something’s itching to get through the foil-lined archway into Amnesia. Chris Liebing was instated to open the club room, which was more packed out than the terrace to start. His tattooed arms reaching for explosive tunes to rain down on the crowd, such as the relentless force on ‘In The Reds’ by Cirez D.

Floorplan returned after playing in the main room last year, taking to the terrace alongside his daughter Lyric, who now collaborates with him under Robert Hood’s Floorplan alias. Swapping deck duties they inputted material from their recent album Victorious, the spirited ‘Mmm Hmm Hmm’ and charged ‘They Can Tell’, joining juicy disco vocals and house anthems. Loco Dice stepped up at 3:30 using Richie Hawtin’s Model 1 mixer, ripping Kevin Knapp’s vocal work on Audiojack – ‘Vibrate’ through it into the teeming terrace. HYTE have built on the terrace roof lighting with extra LED bars, dropping down around the podium when the blonde-wigged dancers throw their limbs around.

Making the journey to the main room to enter Pan Pot’s dungeon, bigger and bolder rhythms were in play. The just released Julian Jeweil remix of ‘Fuego’ by Dubfire & Oliver Huntemann sounded absolutely massive. It was as though they were on a mission to shake out any poltergeists in the walls, slicing in Marco Faraone’s stomping track ‘Boost’, before embarking on a darker road of Berlin-style techno. Before the decks changed hands to Cuartero B2B Mar-T at 5am, Pan-Pot closed using the vocal from Villalobos’ ‘Easy Lee’, and Cuartero took full control with his groovy tech house touch. Terrace time entailed a Loco Dice feast of grinding rhythms and breakbeat accents. Among noticeable sampling, there was possibly even Kanye West’s voice gracing the V-Prof sound system. Bringing plenty of energy in the booth, Loco Dice introduced his own track ‘Seeing Through Shadows’ as another rush of the ice cannon enveloped the front half of the terrace.
Morning light slipped in as Dice hung up the headphones. 2016 will be Loco’s year again, but HYTE has quality residents and guests onboard to also draw in the thousands until September.
