Interview by Dan Prince

Janieck – a huge welcome to DMCWORLD…where on this crazy planet are you today?

Hi DMCWORLD! Right now I’m in The Hague working on new songs.

Your favourite piece of music you have heard since rolling out of bed?

Cake By The Ocean by DNCE, what a track!!

Well young man, what a career you have had in such a short time! Before we get into the music let’s roll back the years to begin with and your first foray into the entertainment world, starring in films such as Pluk van de Petteflet, Crusade in Jeans and My Queen Karo. So growing up, was becoming an actor the early dream?

Well it kind of started as a personal achievement, I just wanted to be on television. I didn’t really expect or think about it as a career. It did go in that direction though, which I will be eternally grateful for.

Have you come from a very creative family background?

Haha well, yes and no. My father is a creative mind but in the marketing business and my brother studies at the Amsterdam Film Academy. But that’s it!

What sort of music were you listening to growing up…when did dance music first enter your radar?

I listened to everything and always listened to the hit radio stations. However, I was a huge fan of Green Day and later on John Mayer. I never was into one genre, I was into good songs and that’s it. Dance entered my radar with ‘This Is What It Feels Like’ by Armin Van Buuren. I loved that song.

True or false : During filming of Crusade In Jeans you bought a guitar an taught yourself to play?

100% true. I started jammin’ with the English kids on the set. A few of them had a guitar with them as well.

Can you remember the first GREAT club you went to?

Hmmm, my spectrum on clubs isn’t really that broad but the first big club I went to was Pacha which was an eye opener for me. I never knew there were such big clubs. I’ve always been more of a bar type.

What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

Starting a career in the music industry. Haha.

You are known worldwide for your collaboration with Lost Frequencies on the track ‘Reality’ which you co-wrote and provided vocals for. The tune reached platinum status throughout Europe. Were you expecting such a huge hit?

No, and sometimes I still don’t realise that. I did expect something you know, it was my biggest release till then, but this big… no.

Which brings us to today and the release of your new single ‘Feel The Love’. Talk us through the track…it has summer all over it…

It’s a simple song and in my opinion they are the best. Life is already a crazy ride and I prefer music being a sedative! Feel The Love for me is reality 2.0. Not because I think it’s ‘better’, music shouldn’t be compared that way. But as I translated my view upon life with ‘Reality’, this is my view upon love. It’s also more of a pop song (structure-wise) and well, of course the guitar theme, which kinda is my thing currently. Production-wise it’s Robin Schulz and Lost Frequencies mixed.

Which famous person would you most like to see play you in a film?

Haha wow, good question. James Franco!

Producers from around the world you are giving high fives to at the moment?

I’m more of a hugging type. Somehow my high fives can go awkwardly wrong haha.

What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of?

I would say ‘Reality’ because of the succes, but it’s not about succes right? What I’m most proud of is that I always go for what I want, despite what people say or think about me. ‘’Listen, smile, agree and then do whatever the f*** you were gonna do anyway’’ – Robert Downey Jr. (to a certain point of course haha)

A dream studio collab?

Max Martin for sure.

True or false? You recorded ‘Reality’ on your mobile phone?

True, BUT you have to know, I recorded the ‘demo’ on my mobile phone. The final audio is recorded in a studio of course.

A big quote from you : “I really like merging different styles. I don’t want to be just another singer songwriter.” Discuss…

Well, I can’t get through a whole album of a singer-songwriter nowadays. So many times all the songs are so similar, I get that – I made such an album myself. But through time it became more about individual songs for me. What kind of sauce you put on top of it is for me a post phase…and I want to taste as much as sauce I can get my hands on.

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in your life and how did you overcome it?

Never been to Ibiza yet. I’m still working on to overcome it.

You always say that as a songwriter you should always listen to your feelings as that is the most important voice to listen to. So, if you were going to write a song write now based on your feelings, what would the track title be?

‘’Damage Control’’

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

Man, a lot !!! All I can say, my goal is to surprise the audience again and again.
