Karmon

Dutch producer Karmon is now six years into his musical journey. But really, it started years before as a child, where he would make music and sounds with anything that came to hand. An older brother then turned him onto the dance and since then he hasn’t looked back. Just recently he has turned out the second edition of the Picture series on his most regal label Diynamic, and once again it showed he has a broad, well developed sound that is mature and musical as well as driving and dynamic. Here we speak to the man behind it about where he starts on new music, whether dance tracks should have an conscious and what else he has on the horizon in 2018.

Tell us how your sound has evolved since 2012 when you first started. Are you a different producer now?
Yes. 6 years is quite some time. During the years I got the chance to play around the world, visit many new places and meet great people. I’ve also learned from experienced artists that have more years behind them than me. I wouldn’t say that I produce things differently than before but I am making different choices. I believe your sound evolves as you experiment and progress.
What are some of the most important lessons you have learnt?
You must always challenge yourself, master your craft and try to evolve in whatever it is you do.
How did you feel to be asked to do Diynamic’s Picture series? What is great about working with the label?
It was the perfect concept and timing for me as I already had a bunch of the tracks that are on Picture finished.
Working with Diynamic is great. I always have the feeling that I am free in making whatever I want and that the support is always there, as long as the music is good.
Where did you start with it? How long did it take to write the tracks?
All the tracks were created in a small period of time. A month or 2 were I was really in the “vibe”. It took around 3 – 4 months more to get the tracks were I wanted them to be.
Where do you start when writing music, always in the same place? Do you have an idea of how you want tracks to sound or do you just experiment?
I feel the most creative when I am in my studio and I can experiment.  I sometimes work on my laptop to sketch ideas but that has some limitations in terms of processing power and equipment.
What inspires your tunes, do they always come from a place of emotion or some back story?
It all happens naturally. I mean inspiration comes from everyday life. Moments, memories, good things and bad things. Indirectly it will come back, music wise.
What tips can you give anyone else when it comes to writing music?
Be yourself. Create the music that you want to create. Don’t be afraid to go left or right.
Should dance music be socially and politically aware, or is it just party music for escaping the everyday?
I don’t think politics has anything to do with it. However, dance music generally spreads good vibes so I see that as a socially positive thing as much as an escape from everyday life.
What else are you looking forward to in 2018?
I just moved into my new studio so I am looking forward to lock myself in and make a lot of new music this year.
