Another superstar from Breda unleashes the massive ‘Carbon’ on Revealed
Interview : Dan Prince
Adithya welcome to DMCWORLD, where in the world are you today?
“Thanks for having me. Today I’m in my hometown of Breda after having a blast with the Revealed guys; Hardwell, Dannic, Dyro, Sick Individuals and Thomas Newson at The Montreux Sundance in Switzerland.”
You have the Buzz Chart office jumping around again, this time thanks to your huge ‘Carbon’, fresh from the Revleaed EP that Hardwell debuted last week. Talk us through the history and sound of the tune…
“I had an idea a couple of months ago which I finished and pitched at Revealed Recordings. In the end it wasn’t really something which could have worked as well as I thought it would, so I decided to change parts of the track. After changing the drop to a more nowadays EDM sound, I pitched it at Hardwell who was very fond of the way it sounded. I wasn’t happy with the break though, cause it didn’t have the same energy as the drop, so I felt I needed to change it. I struggled a bit finding the right tune, but I can remember that one day I had this melody stuck in my head which eventually fitted the track perfectly.”
Being picked up by Revealed is obviously a huge game changer, you only have to see how the careers of Dannic and Dyro changed after Hardwell picked them up. This year yourself and Julian Calor are the producers who the label are concentrating on. So, tell us about being part of the Revealed camp and how they are helping push things on…
“Revealed Recordings is an awesome family to be part of. Everybody is relaxed and we have so much fun when we’re together on tour. The best way to describe the feeling is; being with your best friends around the world and doing what you love to do. It’s good to be part of a family where each artist can give their honest opinion about the tracks we create and share with one another. Revealed have great people to work with and an even better fan base. There’s a lot of talent on the label and there are so many great tracks being released. You know that if you sign a track on the label, it has to be good. And also the buzz on tracks forthcoming on Revealed is huge! This helps in getting noticed by the rest of the industry.”
You work well with Hardwell in the studio – how do you compliment each other?
“Hardwell and I are close friends. We love music and we’ve traveled a lot together in the past when I wasn’t even making music on the level where I am now. Music has been a part of me since the first day I started playing piano at the age of 8 – I even went to the academy of music / conservatory after graduating high school. I think having similar interests and musical background helps a lot in working well together in the studio, besides being friends. We’ve discussed a lot of things in the past, like harmonics, but also technical stuff and we help each other out when possible.”
As you mentioned, you hail from the town of Breda. Dude, is this the dance capital of the world?? Tiesto, Hardwell, W&W, R3hab and Dannic all hail from your home town…so on a night off is it all down to the local pub for a few drinks together?
“Haha, I can’t deny we like to hit the local pub for a few drinks when we’re having a day off.”
Breda is also the town where Elvis Presley’s manager Colonel Tom Parker was born – with that in mind, away from dance music…who are some of the more mainstream artists you love listening to?
“Away from dance music I like to listen to a lot of stuff. John Legend, Pharell Williams, Alicia Keys, Michael Jackson and even Katy Parry. But I’m also very fond of Toto and Earth, Wind & Fire who are not current but are still awesome!”
Let’s kick back to Istanbul last weekend…wow! What was that like for you?
“One word; AMAZING! It was my second I Am Hardwell show after having my first the day before in Antwerp and it was pretty cool to have it in a setting other than a night club. I’ve never been in Istanbul before and I didn’t expect the crowd to respond with so much energy at every track I dropped.”
When did the idea of a career in music first form in your mind?
“Music has been a great part of my life. At the age of 10 I always wanted to play piano for other people just to show what I was capable of. Afterwards I played in a local band called Doin’ it. We broke up about 6 years ago. By that time I started having the idea playing my own music in front of big crowds on festivals instead of playing covers at local bars.
The final step of really giving it a shot to make it in the music industry was about one year ago, when I had this conversation with one of my best friends, who told me that; “this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Don’t let it go!”.”
What was your first break into the music industry?
“My first break into the music industry was signing ‘Party Hard’ on Hardwell’s Revealed Recording, with Hardwell premiering it at Tomorrowland 2012. I can remember standing in the backyard, talking to my parents and getting a call from Mattijs from Revealed; “Party Hard was a bomb, crowd went crazy!”.”
A huge summer of gigs for you stretching out ahead of you, where are some of the shows you cannot wait to hit?
“I can’t wait to play any of the gigs during the summer haha! But Summerfestival in Belgium, Serbia Wonderland and Creamfields festival have got to be 3 of the shows which I am really excited about! Summerfestival was the first festival I’ve ever did and I’ve always wanted to go to Creamfields and now I can be a part of it.”

A recent quote from a superstar DJ…“I believe true DJing is actually an art, but it’s a dying art, as everyone is pushing the sync button…it’s a real shame when you see a ‘DJ’ plug his laptop in and call this DJing. Music will always evolve but sometimes not in the best way.” What are your thoughts on that?
“Even though I’ve been DJing about 2 years now, I agree on the fact that DJing is a true form of art. I do have respect for guys like Real el Canario who did an amazing technical set of Luxurush back in 2004. It’s not something you learn from one day or another. You need to take time to practise and gain tons of experience before you can truly be a good DJ. I always tell my friends; if you can rock a wedding party or a small pub with all kind of genres and feel what people want to hear, then you can say you’re a rock solid DJ.”
