Krewella

One of the wildest live bands in the world getting ready to smash the UK

Chicago’s dynamic three-piece have made a bold impression on the world of electronic music since first exploding onto the scene in 2011. Renowned for their ability to fuse diverse and powerful dance floor rhythms with rock and pop sensibilities, their unique, immersive sound has seen the trio go on to remix Skrillex, Zedd and even Fall Out Boy, as well as record tracks with fellow electronic music stars Nicky Romero, Headhunterz and Gareth Emery. Exhibiting the songwriting prowess of sisters Jahane and Yasmin to the fullest, as well as the anthemic, big room skills of producer Rainman, new track ‘Enjoy The Ride’ ticks all the right boxes and offers up a stellar slice of dance floor pedigree. DMCWORLD checks in…

Interview : Dan Prince

Jahan, Yasmine, Rain Man welcome to DMCWORLD. Where in the world are you today?

“We are currently reporting from Moment Factory HQ in Montreal, Canada! Our Verge College Tour just ended yesterday, so we had to take up the chance to hop in the studio with the talented team here at Moment Factory to film some extra special custom footage for our residency at Light Nightclub in Las Vegas.”

An incredible start to 2014 for you, touring, main stage shows and a brand new single about to drop…’Enjoy The Ride’. Talk us through the sound and history of the song…

“The original demo of the song is actually just the vocal with simple piano chords under it. We started writing like that almost a year ago so we could focus more on the strengthening the topline rather than fitting lyrics to a beat. Once Kris got his hands on our acapella, he started producing the synths around it.”

This story I found hard to believe…your first show outside of Illinois was in Nashville with R3hab and there were only 20 kids there?!!?

“This is true! We only had two songs released at that point and probably five kids in the crowd who knew them. We were just relieved to make through one of our first DJ gigs so we celebrated right after with Fireball Whisky!”

Main Stage at Ultra in Miami. Tell us some of your ‘take home’ moments from that show…

“We always know we put 110% into a show when we end up heaving on the side of the stage. There were quite a few moments during the set when I was pouring out the last words I had in me, and then ran behind the DJ booth to hide the fact that I was gagging. I blame the audience for giving me all the energy to rage so hard that I need to barf.”

What is the top 10 you are currently spinning…?

Tell us about your studio set up…

“Rain Man has a home made studio set up where he uprooted his closet and hung quilts and comforters on the walls to absorb sound. It smells like mildew and sweat since there’s no ventilation in the closet, but that’s the secret to our vocals!”

“Childhood dreams coming true — proud to announce that we’re playing Lollapalooza 2014 in our home city Chicago!!!!” – how excited are you about this little baby…?

“We used to dream of GOING to this festival when we were teens – so the fact that we are playing it is still unbelievable. Chicago holds some of our most loyal, passionate fans…it is always a huge event when we come home to play. It’s a giant gathering of our core fans, our high school friends, and family. There is nothing that is more fulfilling than being united with all these special people over music.”

And finally, Kris, how is the film score dream coming along?

“Krewella records come first! Hopefully once we knock out a few albums we can transition into music for films!”
