Getting set for Sankeys Warehouse New Years Day. Ibiza underground in da house

Interview by Rob Chadwick

A huge welcome back to DMCWORLD…let’s kick off with the Amnesia Closing a few weeks back. How was it, what tunes stood out for you?

Hey DMCWORLD! The Amnesia Closing was amazing – although the set times were reduced to one hour and a half hours due to problems with the government. The tunes which stood out where Kollective Turmstrasse’s ‘Sorry I’m Late’, my remix of Luca Popof’s track ‘Going Back’, some new tracks that Cuartero gave me before the party and a track from Traumer called ‘Cascou’ with his alias Rajine…not sure if this will ever be released but the reaction was crazy due to his crazy breakdown with live percusions.

And how was the season overall? What was good, what was bad?

The season for me was good. I was resident at HYTE – the new party at Amnesia on Wednesdays. I played 6 times, some were super good, others where not so good…but you know, the first season is difficult and I’m happy to be part of a new night in Ibiza and next year will be much better.

What makes Amnesia so good for you, why do you like playing there so much, what’s special about it?

It’s one of the club’s which changed the electronic music world with Alfredo, Paul Oakenfold etc. back around 1988 – and the walls reflect this spirit, you can just feel it. It has adapted through the years but the essence is still all over the place. People love the Terrace, but for me both rooms are special. I would say that Pacha, Space and Amnesia made Ibiza different and of course later DC 10. Not so sure about what is happening with Ushuaia, for me it looks more like a Miami party.

Do you get the same thrills anywhere in winter as you do at Amnesia?

Sometimes, but not so often as I would like. All this international crowd on holiday coming to party to Ibiza is something difficult to find anywhere else, but sometimes there are amazing nights all over the world.

Hopes for 2016?

My plan is to continue working on my solo productions and on my collaboration with my Italian brother Luca Donzelli…and I will also be more focused in helping HYTE grow this night.

You play Sankeys on New Years Day – what should people expect?

They should expect sexy techouse grooves and many of my new tracks that will be released through 2016.

Tell us about your new EP ‘In Your Hands’ – what inspired or influenced it?

‘In Your Hands’ is a track which was produced thinking of the moment of the night when you want to change the mood of the night from more warm up to main set time. We had it ready some months ago and Mathias Kaden had to make the remix, but he had a hard time finding the right way. He had two versions before he was happy with the final one. Tobi Neumann played with me at Sonar and I thought it was a great idea to have another remix from him as next year it’s the 10th anniversary of Wow! Recording and he remixed the first release in 2006.

You have also got a remix on MadTech out – how do you approach remixes?

I try to make my own version of the track, with Alexis’s track it was more difficult because I already liked the original but the stems were amazing so it just flowed.

And how much of an influence has been Kerri and Madtech? Are you a fan of that US house sound?

I have been on the scene for a while and I was a fan of the US House sound before, I remember buying US vinyl which sounded much better than European vinyl as the quality of the pressing and the mastering was on another level. Now I’m not so sure as I don’t always know where the producer is from…and house music has changed so much that I would say today…I like global house music.

How do you like playing dark warehouses vs sunny open air gigs – does your set change?

I like both. It’s a different mood. I play similar, but probably more tougher in the winter and more melodic in the summer.

What else do you want to tell us about?

I have just confirmed a release on Darious Syrossians’ label Do Not Sleep and Cuartero’s label Sanity. No idea about release dates yet, but very happy to be on board with those guys…
