How has MATERIA started for you in Ibiza?

We have kicked off well, the first one was nice despite Sonar being on same day and plenty of other parties and established opening parties . The crowd rocked it just like our DJs!

You do Materia shows all round the world but where is best for you, where personally do you enjoy playing most?
The MATERIA Shows around the world have been massive! To name a few, the one in Belgium with Carl Cox was amazing and also the one with Chris Liebing in Belgium in our new Factory building (where in October Jeff Mills will play in our collaboration with Link Festival) . The one with did in Zig Zag in Paris was awesome too and in Vienna as well…many more will come worldwide, as I have said already – not ONLY Ibiza!! I enjoy at the moment to play most in South America, Argentina and Colombia, I love these territories so much!
Do you play differently at your own Materia parties than you do when playing for someone else? Is it like more of a home gig?
Hmm I don’t think so, most of the people are well informed which artists they gonna check out, so they know what they’re getting on their plate. It’s only in countries like China or India that they don’t really know what they are listening too yet, but they will get there too. Yes it’s of course like a home gig, but at the same time it’s quite stressfull as you are responsible to give your artists you booked a great time as well and make sure it all goes smooth. Hey – and at the same time remember it’s your night and prepare yourself! It’s different than when you go and play elsewhere, where you only have to make sure you do a good job by yourself..some people have 3 or 4 “night” managers for that,  but I think it’s important that the man who is behind the concept asks the artists personally if all is cool and smooth for them…it’s important to say thank you at the end of the day…

Can you remember the first time you went to Ibiza and what it was like?

I was on the island for the first time 1996, exactly 20 years ago. I went to Privilege first where now our Materia night is. I went to Space which wasn’t as big as it is now…it was a funny week. Since that year I have been coming back every single year more and more…with that same feeling that I discovered vibewise and spiritwise that embraced me back then and made me come back every year since. Especially when it started getting very interesting for me musicwise too with Carl Cox and the Cocoon nights on the island.

How has the island changed in that time?

Many things have changed! From the small local roads to the now expressways from the airport, to the more and more club nights and projects. So so much to be honest. Techno as the main sound started only these last seven years…before that there was only Carl and Sven bringing the music to the island that I liked! For me it’s a year of discovery and I hope people wanna discover it too . There are too many groupies following created hypes, in their hearts they are not following their real love of music. I just wish people would go and enjoy the music and dance rather than being seen in the ‘it’ places.

Away from the music, what else do you love about the island?
Nature in Ibiza is so amazing. The forests, Es Vedra, Atlantis, so many nice beaches and good restaurants everywhere. To be honest this is what I like the most, going and walking for hours surrounded by nature. Where I live it’s next to a forest and every day I go for a 45 minute run through the trees. It is a magic island trust me. It’s not just the nightlife, there is so much beauty.
Was else have you got on this summer apart from MATERIA?
Some great festivals and other great parties…the Nature One festival in Germany in August is always a pleasure to play as lots of people from my country every year travel to that festival.  I am going back in September to Argentina as well and will also play some niceparties in Tunis and Hungary etc etc…Of course every Sunday MATERIA at Vista club in Ibiza…

You posted this on Facebook recently – what did you mean?

“We were born to be real, not to be perfect.”
Yes you don’t agree with me? It’s surely better to be real then trying to be perfect, because nobody is perfect. Also its important to stay REAL and not try to be nice in someone’s face when you don’t mean it in your heart, that’s superficial and not real at all ! It’s the same as trying to be a superstar without any talent or background and based purley on money…
Marco Bailey’s MATERIA club night continues every Sunday in Ibiza at Vista w/ Marco Bailey, Ray Kajioka, VRIL, Yawa B2B Horacio Cruz…
