The Toolroom boss reveals all about the big move to Eden as Toolroom hits 10

Interview : Dan Prince

Mark a big welcome back to DMCWORLD towers as Toolroom moves across Ibiza to Eden with the new Dutch Panama team transforming the venue into the superclub it should have been from day one. Did you have any trepidations on moving to San Antonio? The town has cleared it’s act up now and with the likes of Ocean Beach, Hed Kandi, Mambo and Savannah all firing, it’s a different place to the image SKY TV portrayed all those years ago…

“If I am honest Dan yes of course we did. Being on the other side of the island for so long is a big shift in how we address things. But essentially our audience is in San Antonio so why not be there and make it more affordable for people to come to our shows? It was the logical nxt step to do our parties there.”

Did you run into any problems booking your line ups, surely the uncertainty of the venue and opening date must have caused havoc with you?

“It was all so last minute as the deal with the new owners was very late. What with everything going on with Toolroom Ten we were not going to focus our efforts on Ibiza this year but with Mark Netto and Dannie Whittle being on board then along with Rene the club manager who we have worked with before, it made it very appealing. Geographically and the look of the club was the complete package. The delay hindered our promo more than anything as we had less time to communicate with people visiting the island.”

Let’s talk about your line ups for 2013. Have you altered the style of guest in any way from who you would book for Space?

“Yes very much so. We stripped it back to a very techy/deep style of music. We were trying to be all things to all people last year at Space and I think we learnt from that. One thing I do know that to succeed in Ibiza you need a concise musical statement and we perhaps a bit too broad. People want to know what they are going to hear…”

Who are you especially pleased to have got on board this summer at Eden – you have some massive line ups!

“MK – I’m a big fan and he’s one of my real heroes. He has been instrumental in bringing me across to soul so it’s great having him on board. There are some really cool new acts like Lars Vegas and Weiss who are good to have involved as it’s a very important stage in their career.”

You have played at Eden before of course, for our readers who have not been to Ibiza yet this summer, what can you tell us about the multi million pound refit? How does the old place look?

“It’s just a completely different club. Possible the nicest looking room on the island. Sound and lighting systems are out of this world…it’s all set up to be a real powerhouse. Don’t take my word for it, go check it out yourself!”

What 1 song will always remind you of Ibiza?

“‘The Man With The Red Face’ – it spawned this whole craze of people sitting down on the drop. Real hairs on the back of the neck stuff. I remember when Pete Tong did it live at the BBC Radio 1 Weekend and everyone sat down which is one of those memories that will live with me forever.”

What is coming out for you and the label over the summer…

“All efforts our focused on Toolroom Ten whilst I will be remixing classics like ‘Downpipe’ and ‘Red Face’. A couple of new tracks coming from me towards the end of the summer…”

What is the 1 festival you cannot wait to get your teeth into this year?

“I really like SW4 as it’s like a festival in your back garden. All my mates come down and it’s not very often I get to do that.”

You have a night off from Toolroom at Eden, what club and DJ do we find you at?

“Carl Cox on a Tuesday.”

Where are some of the beaches and restaurants you love in Ibiza?

“Both in one…Nassau. So much so that I named a remix after it.”
