MDE

Since rebranding as MDE earlier this year, the duo formerly known as My Digital Enemy have enjoyed a strong few months with a string of successful releases including ‘Feelings’, ‘Magical’ and ‘Acting Like A Freak’ winning praise from Laurent Garnier, Danny Howard and Golf Clap, amongst others. MDE have just collaborated with legendary jungle MCs The Ragga Twins on ‘Move It Up’ on Get Twisted Records, so DMC caught up with the duo for a chat…

Hi MDE, how are things with you?

Really good, thanks – working hard in the studio and we’ve recently returned from ADE.

You recently changed your name from My Digital Enemy to MDE. Why did you decide to rebrand?

We were moving musically towards a new sound and decided that the re-brand would reflect that.

Given this name change, can listeners expect a change of direction from MDE?

Yes, they can! We have moved into a more baseline driven sound which you can check out on our new releases on Sleazy G, Get Twisted and Simma Black.

You’ve just collaborated with jungle MCs The Ragga Twins on ‘Move It Up’. How did that collaboration come about?

Our publisher had the acapella for a while, so we were working on a track that needed an urban vocal and The Ragga Twins one just fitted perfectly.

Your previous release was called ‘Acting Like A Freak’. What was the inspiration behind that track?

We wanted to do something with a slight G house vibe, but also a little twisted. We bought a new UAD plug-in which pitches vocals in real time. We got the Trix vocal and played around with it, then got the beats and bassline to follow. The rest is history!

There is a lot of ‘90s house influences in your music. Is that your favourite period, musically?

Yeah, we love that vibe! Definitely think it’s the best period of house music.

What are your other favourite memories from the 1990s?

Going to Ibiza for the first time in 1998 was the best experience of the ‘90s. Saw so many crazy things and feel in love with house music there.

Which other producers inspire you?

Loving Sonny Fodera, Low Steppa, Chris Lorenzo at the moment. Really inspiring stuff.

What venue(s) would you really love to perform at?

We’d love to play at Ushuaïa in Ibiza and also Sound in LA.

What can we expect from MDE in 2018 and beyond?

Lots more music and collabs!

How do you both choose to unwind from producing and DJing?

I would like to say a work out in the gym, but being honest, it’s a few jars of beer and chat hahaha!
