Michael Calfan

Interview by Dan Prince

Michael a huge welcome back to DMCWORLD…where on planet earth are you right now?

I’m currently in Bali, enjoying the sun but working on some tunes too. (Just writing that to make sure that my manager won’t worry haha!)

What is the best piece of new music you have heard today?

Mura Masa, favourite song at the moment, amazing production.

Well you have certainly hit the ground running in 2016 young man! Your new single ‘Nobody Does It Better’ has already racked up over 2 million Soundcloud plays and over a million YouTube views on the video. Did you know on completion you had smashed it again with another piece of dancefloor magic?

Honestly you never know when/if you are doing something big. I’m doing a lot of music and I love everything single piece of the music I do. Sometimes I am releasing something, for me it’s amazing, and then nothing happens haha, music is magic and you can’t control it.

The track was supported by just about every major producer in the world. Who are some of the names you always check for to see if they like your new music?

I’m more looking for people known as tastemakers because they are not playing the record because it came from me, or because the label told them that it’s a prio, but because they like it. For example Pete Tong, Danny Howard. But I’m also looking after young artist because I think that this generation of 20 year old producers, with a big Soundcloud community are the future and maybe the best tastemakers.

You have just returned from the Nobody Does It Better US tour…where were some of the locations that really stood out for you?

Los Angeles and San Francisco are always good, they knows my music and the vibe I’m looking for. I played my last show in Minneapolis where electronic music is known thanks to Avicii, David Guetta, DJ Snake and they loved the music. The most important for me is to put people in a cool vibe, when they are in, I can be at the other side of the planet I will have good time.

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend…

Fabich – One Two

I love this record so much. I thought it was gonna be really big, because the sound is unique and when the drop come in, reactions are just amazing. Keep an eye on this guy!

Kungs – This Girl

Kungs is a young guy I met because we are on the same team. At only 19 year old his record in #1 in France. We were in the studio together and trust me he is really talented ! A track to add to your collection.

Michael Calfan – Nobody Does It Better (KC Light Remix)

Sometimes I’m a bit tired to play my version so now I’m playing the KC Lights remix, his remix has a kind of underground vibe I love!

Format B – Chunky

One of my weapons in all my shows, this record was an anthem last year in Ibiza and people are still loving it. Sometimes it’s great to have a hit in the scene because on the long term it becomes an anthem.

Motez, Tkay Maidza – Down like this

This track is a killer track during festivals!

An up and coming producer to watch out for this year?

Fabich !!!

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in your life and how did you overcome it?

I think it’s always ‘good’ to make some mistakes, I started music really young so of course I signed some bad deals, but it’s life and I’m still here so nothing really bad.

Which famous person would you most like to see play you in a film?

Chris Hemsworth.

What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

I hate risks to be honest. One day a promoter told me to not visit Haiti by myself but of course I made it, and it was pretty cool!

What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of?

Just being able to live thanks to your passion is a dream.
