Finest record you have ever played to a dancefloor: ‘Aint Nobody’ – Rufus And Chaka Khan

Best ever festival story: Closing the dance arena for Exit Festival 3 or 4 years ago on a Monday morning 6-8am in front of 14000 people. The police came at 7am and tried to shut it down. The sun was just coming up, I was playing my remix of Ian Brown ‘Time Is My Everything’. I pleaded with the police to let us carry on, the crowd got right behind me. After a minute or two, the police literally threw their hats off into the crowd, opened their shirts and tied their ties around their heads and joined in dancing on the stage with the dancers. It was incredible and the crowd erupted and i carried on till 8.15am. possibly my best ever DJing experience.

The DJ:

Where is home:

Istanbul

Describe your DJ style:

My first love is House music, although my sets will contain songs from across the entire dance music spectrum – as long as it sounds good and gets people moving, I will play it. It’s great to see the crowd dance and know your choice of music has done that – it gets me moving behind the decks too. And I’m still Old Skool on that front – CDs and vinyl over computers for me!

First break into the music industry:

I started playing music back in 1990. I came to the UK in 1995 and through a friend, met the late great Tony de Vit. He took me down to Devon to play alongside him at a club night called Hot House. It was an amazing night. Tony took me under his wing and more gigs followed. When I returned to Istanbul, my UK experiences and Hi-NRG sets got me a slot on the best dance music station then, Radio 2019. I got massive exposure and it set me on the path I am today.

The tunes of 2011:

For me, Adele – Rolling In The Deep, and Oliver $ – Doin Ya Thang (Oliver $ remix).

DJ heroes:

I am a big fan of Erick Morillo. Also Frankie Knuckles and the late Tony de Vit. All three are total legends and amazing DJs that know how to get a party going.

Top 5 records you are spinning right now:

I have an eclectic record box, but here are five that come out quite regularly at the moment:

  1. 1.Ozan Samiloglu ft Kaye Styles – Wanna See Ya Move Girl
  2. 2.Avicii – Levels
  3. 3.Nicky Romero – Camorra
  4. 4.Marcus Schossow – Las Vegas
  5. 5.Franke Pharoah – Understand This Groove 2011 (Ozan Samiloglu Remix)

Your best DJ set of 2011:

I had a ball at Club Almahara in Kyrenia, North Cyprus recently. It was packed and lively all night long. Every track I played the crowd went wild to, singing along and dancing crazy. It can’t get any better than that for a DJ.

Finest record you have ever played to a dancefloor:

Jaydee – Plastic Dreams. This all-time classic tune never fails to get the dancefloor going.

Best festival story:

A few years back, I had the privilege of playing alongside the likes of Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Andy Fletcher and George Acosta at the Electronically Yours festival in Istanbul. Paul Van Dyk liked my set so much he got me to go back on the decks for a second time. Was a mega moment for me

Best club you have ever been to:

I’ve been spoilt as for many years I was the resident of Turkish superclub Reina, which is on the Bosphorus in Istanbul. The atmosphere, the people, the views! Different league. And then at the other end of the spectrum, I love going to the Peppermint Club in Pristina, Kosova. They love to party there!

Guilty pleasure song:

Gutterpunk – Up 211. Great electro mash-up track, I just lose myself in it.
