Caspa Codina

What’s The Best Night Out You’ve ever Had?
It was New Years Eve 2004: started at a house party, then a ware-house rave, add a bottle of absinthe and then it was back to mine where I finally got it on with Katia for the first time after several weeks of chasing (Katia does the spoken vocals on my album) …
It’s both the music and the company that makes a night special.

What’s Your Favourite Club?
The Lux, Lisbon,
But also,  really enjoying the back room at the Wilmington Arms at the moment. Did the first Caspa Codina live show with the full band there. Special atmosphere, still has a nice old school-edge, and plenty of good live acts play there…

What’s Your Favourite Record Of All-time?
There’s too many all-time greats. ‘Night Clubbing’ LP by Grace Jones is near the top of the list, but the Mary Jane Girls album is current fav.
Rick James at the controls, (along with Marvin Gayes’s sexual healing) it pretty much set the blue-print for a lot of modern R’n’b; plus it’s got some shocking 80s electro-y club stuff…

What Record Can’t You Stand?
The super embarrasing: ‘boom box’  (or what ever it was called) by Robbie Williams: I think it won ‘dance record of the year’ or something.. outrageous! Just a single note of Robbie William’s voice gets me feeling depressed.

What Record Did You Lose Your Virginity Too?
Janet Jackson ‘Velvet Rope’ -definitely her choice not mine, but it did the trick…

What Was The Last Record You Bought?
Raymond Scott “Manhattan Research” . This man is THE original synth & sequencer pioneer, 20 years ahead of Kraftwork, etc…
It’s his 100th anniversary this year… He deserves a lot more recognition.

Name Three Of Your Biggest Influences…
David Bowie, Donald Fagen, Bootsy Collins,

Who Would Play You In ‘Caspa Codina’ The Movie’
Probably my cousin & producer Gabriel Olegavich -people say we look quite alike.

What’s Your Dream?
To make an album every year, and also set-up a girl band like Rick James’s “Mary Jane Girls” they would be called ‘The Codinas’.

How Do You Escape?
In the studio with bank of synthesizers, A microphone, headphones, and syncopated groove…
Or by diving into turquoise waters with a snorkel and mask.

What Is Your Favourite Possession?
I’m not that materialistic, but probably one of my synths. I
recently bought this very early mini Casio Organ (??) the design & build quality are exception -really thick cream plastic.

What Is Your Life Philosophy?
Try it. You might like it…. (I did)

What’s In Your Pockets?
USB stick, plectrum, lyrics & lists on the back of an envelope, coppers.

If You Were An Animal, What Animal and Why?
A Wolf… I like to go wild after dark, and howl at the moon. Wolves are expected to do that on a daily basis.
Red Riding Hood here I come…

You Are Having A Party, Whom Dead Or Alive Is On The Guest List?
Bootsy Collins & his Rubber Band, Rick James & his girls, and the cast from Faster Pussy Cat Kill Kill Kill.

When Was The Last Time You Embarrassed Yourself?
In the video for my new single ‘Used to go Dancing’, there was a shower scene, and no one had brought a towel so I had to use this tiny hand-towel -which was continually about to fall down & looks well dodgy; you can see it on the video; it’s like that scene from Starsky and Hutch.

Tell Us Something That We Don’t Know About ‘Caspa Codina’
My Great Grandfather was a catalonian pop singer at the beginning of the 20th century, he released a few gramaphone discs, I’ve even got one on cassette: classic Spanish popular song from back in the day -proper old school.
