The Scouse Numero Uno, John Kelly

My first time in Liverpool was at Quadrant Park in Liverpool you where having a piss seeing some guy asking some poor sod what the time time was and when he looked at his watch, the other guy simply ripped his watch off his wrist and walked off. A classic Quad moment. So your home city have been responsible over the years for some of the most funniest, coolest, most talented DJs in the game. Who do you big up from this era?
“For me Mike Knowler and Andy Carrol were the most influencial because it was them two that I first heard play house music. They where the  DJ’s who help create the Liverpool dance scene as I knew it and for that I will be forever grateful.”

John, you have DJ’d at EVERY club in the fucking world. You are a legend in Ibiza for instance – which one club and story do you still chuckle at from your times behind the decks…
“Well I think one of the best clubs in the world I ever played at was Mannumission when it was in Ku, Ibiza – the biggest club in the world. And my most memorable moment there was when they hauled some guy dressed as an angel up on a wire, wings spread like an eagle with a lit firework in each hand. They pulled him up so high that the fireworks set fire to these 50 foot drapes that they had hanging from the roof. Slowly the fire spread, they pulled him down ,fire extinguished him for good measure – or just to punish him for being so fucking stupid. The place was chocka but everyone just moved out of the way of the falling burning drapes thinking it was part of the show.I plugged my headphones in the mic socket and told everyone in a robitc sounding scouse accent to “keep calm, move away from the fire, just calm down” – then realised I sounded like one of Harry Enfields scousers telling everyone to “calm down calm down” so I said “move out the way dont PANIC “and as soon as I said the word “PANIC” – yeah everyone started panicking, falling over each other, fighting , diving in the swimming pool, fucking mayhem. So I joined them and ran away… There was also the time in Ibiza when I got pulled over by the police just coming out of Amnesia. I didn’t know Danny Rampling, who was following me to my villa had pulled in behind me to wait for me. You would have just got of wouldn’t ya? As I was still not completly off the main road the copper told me to move, so I only reversed right into Danny in front of the coppers. I thought we are nicked, but Danny broke the breathalizer and the other copper wouldnt lend him his one in case Danny broke that one too and they ended up with nothing so they let us go –  we got back to our villa and had a ‘we are free’ in ibiza party.”

What do you think of the Cream boys – were they really good for the city? –  And what do you think of Promoter’s James’ Barton’s hair – honestly?
“I think Cream is one of the best things that ever came out of Liverpool, it showed the world that Liverpool is the place to be if ya wanna party. James’s hair ? Well he’s got red hair and he’s an Evertonian….

Who are your favouririte Liverpool musicians of all all time?
“The Farm…only coz they are my mates!”

So Mr Kelly, mate, you have been rocking the block so well for so well…fair play my man. You can mix so well and know how to start a party from the word go. Where does the energy come from, and what is the best DJ you’ve played seen ever?
“My energy comes from the reaction the music gets from the crowd and the best DJ i have seen play in year is Laid Back Luke.,Fuck me he is amazing, some of the stuff he does is incredible and baffliing at the same time.”
