The German Desolat producer absolutely ripping up Ibiza in 2012

Welcome to DMCWORLD. Let’s begin by giving your brother some respect for showing you the way into EDM. He bought a pair of  Technics that you hijacked at an early age and quickly learnt how to beatmatch. What were the records you learnt to DJ with?

“Yesss, some love for my brother here, hi fabe! Well that time we were totally into Hip Hop and Rap music. My first vinyls were from Jurassic 5, DasEFX, KRS One, Mobb Deep… stuff like that!

Your brother was quite a cool hip hop DJ, he made it to rank three at on of the ITF Scratch comps – was there ever any rivalry between you two?

“Not at all! He was so good in it and I was proud of him and my friends, who founded the “Needle Addicts” crew that time. We were hanging out all day and they practised and practised and… I tried to learn from my boys!”

You come from a musical family, your father was a drummer, you mother loved classical music. What did they think of their daughter’s choice of a career in electronic dance music?

“My family is very proud of me. Even in the beginning I had the full support of my mother and the rest of the family, she always told me to follow my heart and believed 100% in me and my ideas, well and she knew that I would do it my way anyways. My dad downloads my mixes and loves my music, I am working on a track “Daddys little Curl” where I recorded him playing some freestyle drums.”

One of your first ever DJ gigs is the stuff of dreams, warming up for Loco DIce. You were a fan of his music before then, how did the night go…

“I still remember that night so well. I had my best friend Tessa with me, she was the biggest Loco Dice fan and even more nervous than me! Dice showed up early that night and listened to my warm up set together with his (now mine, too) manager Tom. Some minutes before Dice started to play, he told me he really liked the way I play and suggested that we should play back2back after he played a few hours. Said and done. We finished that night with an amazing back2back, Tessa danced till the very last song and Dice and me stayed in contact from that day on.”

3. Hanfry Martinez – Nothing Written (Anthea rmx)
4. Rhadoo – Geemac

You once said that the important thing you ever learnt from Desolat label partner Martin Buttrich was “how to make my songs three dimensional”. Care to explain that…

“It’s about space in a song. There are songs which feel flat, 2 dimensional, every sound hits you right away, no development or movement in the sound structure. I try to imagine a song as a huge bubble. So I try to put some sounds left behind me, some are crawling around in front of me from left to right, some are just happening once, behind my back?! It’s hard to explain, I think my latest remix for Miss Kittin (Girlz) is a good example. But I am still learning to expand this “sound bubble”!”

You are renowned for your spooky samples that you use on your own productions. What is the strangest sound you have recorded and used on a track?

“SPOOKY? Maybe unusual, yes. The “strangest” sound I recorded was in San Francisco, I spent an afternoon at the wave organs, at the bay…sounds almost modular and couldn’t be more organic.”

What is the record that changed your life?

“Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Who are the producers around the world that you are giving high fives to at the moment?

“Premiesku aka Livio & Roby + George, incredible 100% analog live act! And newcomers such as Enzo Siragusa, Fernando Costantini.”

What DJ that you see out there always surprises you with their sets?

“Dyed Soundorom.”

You are one of Ibiza’s favourite DJs. This year the island has seen the corporate take over – it is very difficult for promoters or new nights to break into the island now as there are a group of people who control the artists coming into the white isle now. What are your thoughts on Ibiza in 2012 clubwise?

“There were big changes this year, a lot of big names started their own nights and as far as I know they are all doing well. I am not into this “island politics”. I rather concentrate on my own little night “tINI and the gang” that we started again in august. A weekly and free beach party, we found a new home at Sirocco beach!”

What one record will always remind you of Ibiza?

“Layo and Bushwacka – Love Story.”

What has been the best club night of 2012 for you?

“Enter at Space, Cocoon at Amnesia, Fuse at Sankeys, tINI and the gang at Sirocco Beach.”

Your London residency at Fuse is always brilliant. How similar are the crowds in London and Berlin?

“It’s a different crowd, a different vibe in each city. I love to play in Berlin, the club scene is amazing, but I prefer the London crowd, playing at fuse for me is like coming home and playing for friends, they trust me, I trust them. I built a special relation with that crowd.”

Now that the dust has settled, are you happy looking back at your first long player ‘Tessa’? What did it teach you?

“I am super happy looking back at “Tessa”. I think your first album will always be special, no matter what. I am very proud of my work and although I developed my producing and learned more about music, this album is still 100% tINI and a part of my (musical-) history.”

What is coming next from the tINI studio…

“New tracks for Desolat, Rekids, DIssonant… New remixes, new collaborations. Working a lot!”
