DMCWORLD checks in…
Steve a huge welcome back to DMCWORLD! Where on planet earth are you right now?
Thanks, I currently live in my hometown of Manchester in the UK.
The finest piece of new music you have heard today?
Moby & The Void Pacific Choir – Don’t Leave Me (Reinier Zonneveld remix)
How did you first get into the music industry?
I was about 16 when I first started producing music, I think I grabbed myself a copy of Reason 3 or something at the time and that’s when I was infected with the production bug and haven’t stopped since. It was always just a hobby until a couple of years ago when I started getting involved deeper in the music scene.
What was your first connection with music? Did your parents play it a lot around you?
Surprisingly my parents didn’t have a massive musical influence on me growing up. I’d always liked music as a kid and my musical taste was always pretty broad. I was introduced to my first proper clubbing experience when I went out to a Drum & Bass night at the Apollo Theatre when I was a teenager. I remember the energy and the excitement listening to some of the best DJs in the world double dropping and switching tracks with ease, it ultimately inspired me to grab a pair of Technic 1210 MK3 turntables and start collecting and mixing vinyl. I think I then caught the production bug from that and started making music on reason 3 or something!
Have your surroundings influenced your sound, if so how?
I guess you could say that where I have grown up definitely has influenced my sound. Manchester is home to the Warehouse Project where the biggest and best artists from all over the globe play every year from D&B to House & Techno. I get my influences from everywhere!
How would you describe your sound?
I would sum my sound up as deep & dark and energetic. I pride myself on being a diverse and open minded producer, sometimes I make more emotional & melodic music that would be better suited to home-listening, however I grew up around bass orientated music so most of my productions are heavier and have a bit of “bite” to them. When playing out, I like to take the crowd on a journey through sound, starting with straight up club music and ending on more deeper and moving material.
When you go into a studio, do you already have an idea of what you want to produce or write or do you go in with an open mind?
It really depends. Sometimes I have been inspired by certain tracks beforehand and go into the studio aiming for a certain sound, but to be honest most of the time I just sit there messing around with a load of synths / drum machines / samples until I create something that sounds cool. Once that creative moment strikes, I capitalise on it.
If you weren’t a producer, what do you think you would be doing right now?
Probably eating nachos full time.
