Vibe Killers

Brothers springing straight out of the streets of Burnley, both Mark and Mickey Horsey have turned heads throughout the electronic musical realm since their rebirth under a new banner back in 2014. Such drive and determination have seen them gain support from big names including Hot Since 82, Loco Dice, Richy Ahmed, Jamie Jones, wAFF and more.

Having accomplished releases on such respected labels as Knee Deep In Sound, Hottrax, Elrow, Solâ, Material and much more, the stock of this sibling pairing is one that continues to bubble over the surface much to everyone’s delight. We check in with the likely lads as the fever pitch continues on their latest release on Hot Trax…

Hi guys, thanks for taking the time to chat. You’ve been keeping yourselves busy throughout November – shows in London, Essex and one coming up in Hull, how have they been?

Yeah really good pal, London especially. We played just before Yousef so the room was nice and busy. Good to meet him too!

Every DJ is different in regard to how they prepare themselves for a set, do you two tend to put a lot of research into the shows or keep a more spontaneous approach when it comes to song selection etc?

I always plan a set to be honest, but depending on how busy it is or the time of the show, we may add stuff into it spontaneously.

Speaking of song selection, are there any records that are getting plenty of spins from you at the minute?

It’s not exactly a peak timer, but Matthias Meyer – Infinity is so sick, if you like hip hop you’ll definitely recognise the sample.

You recently released on Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep In Sound, “Means of Escape” certainly had some spaced out, darker vibes going on, is this a sound that you’ve been working with a lot recently, or do you tend to switch it up in the studio as much as possible?

I love that track, it’s special for us as it’s our first original on KDIS which is my favourite label. Every release is sick, and the label is run so well. We do switch it up in the studio, but would like to get a bit more of this stuff out there.

As a duo there must be plenty of ideas flying around, can you tell us about your process in the studio? Do you each specialise in a certain part of the production or do you go with whatever is working well?

Mickey is definitely more hands on with the production. I come up with some cool ideas though I think, and any vocals you hear on the tracks are what I have found. Used stuff from hip-hop albums and interviews, and even off of PS4 games ha ha! I think the key to production is to keep things simple, that’s what we do anyway.

Plenty of upcoming releases for you to shout about: Material, Hot Trax and a recent release on Lost – what is it like working with such big labels?

Mint pal and a dream come true! Jamie Jones asking to sign 2 of our tracks is what every artist dreams of isn’t it? All the labels are ran so professionally too.

Which release are you most excited for everyone to hear and why?

It’s got to be the Hottrax EP. It’s been in the pipeline for a while now and is getting some unreal feedback.

And finally, 2018 is nearly here – what are your plans going into the new year and beyond?

Music coming up on Sola, Rawthentic Music and our new label Star Cycling Club, and shows confirmed for Southampton, Hull & London…
