Various Artists - Watergate 18 Mixed By Butch - (Watergate)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 Compilations
It would be easy to collect the Watergate series just for the wonderfully exotic artwork they manage to pull out the bag every time…but fortunately there is some musical substance to the series as well. Butch steps up to the decks for their ‘coming of age’ edition – not that age is a factor on The Horrorist’s ‘One Night In NYC’, unfortunately. I know I should probably be in on the joke here, but a track about date rape doesn’t do anybody any favours, no matter how decent the Villalobos remix. Gl...

Various Artists - Kitsuné New Faces II - (Kitsuné)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 Compilations
Kitsuné are an impressively diverse label these days, and a listen to this year’s ‘New Faces’ compilation confirms a willingness to go quite a long way from their dance roots. As if to emphasise this they start with Beau’s ‘One Wing’, which is transported through time from the 1970s but is done well. Some very serviceable pop follows in the shape of ‘Shot’ by Too Be Frank, which has some nice garage overtones, but is ultimately overshadowed by the classy ‘Look In Vain’ from Hot Chip offshoots Ne...

Purity Ring - Another Eternity - (4AD)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 Albums
Edmonton duo Purity Ring are back with a second album – and having established a very distinctive sound with their 2012 debut ‘Shrines’, they build on that originality with ‘Another Eternity’. There is a lot of unresolved tension in this music, with massive R&B beats supporting full bodied bass sounds and a widescreen texture that plays into singer Megan James’s hands. Many of the songs have a powerful core – ‘Push Pull’ and ‘Stranger Than Earth’ especially – but while James’s intense and ve...

Snow Ghosts - A Wrecking - (Houndstooth)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 Albums
The striking cover for Snow Ghosts’ second album gives a lot away about the content – for this is dark, driven and primitive music with heavy instrumental colours and occasional flashes of light. There is less focus on rhythm this time and the whole thing feels more ‘through composed’, meaning the album is best heard in full rather than taking chunks from it. That said, there are natural highlights, and the central track ‘The Wreck’ has some incredibly powerful and industrial noises. Singer Hann...

Nadastrom - Nadastrom - (Dubsided)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 Albums
Nadastrom is the LA-based duo Dave Nada and Matt Nordstrom, and they have already made waves with their first track ‘Somebody’, released towards the end of last year. Yet this is another level entirely, a whole album that goes as deep as you like without ever losing its vitality. That much is clear right from the opening scene set by ‘Intro’, after which ‘Go Back’ reveals itself to be a classy piece of work while ‘Hide The Advertisement’ and ‘House Shoes’, with Nina K, are hot and very sultry. ‘...

Various Artists - Late Night Tales: Jon Hopkins - (Late Night Tales)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 Compilations
The first four piano chords of Ben Lukas Boysen’s ‘Sleepers Beat Theme’ set the whole tone for Jon Hopkins’ masterful contribution to the Late Night Tales series. In that brief moment all cares are washed clean away, the mind entering a blissful state that Hopkins maintains seamlessly for the next hour and a bit. Time hovers beautifully in tracks like Holy Other’s ‘Yr Love’, Jónsi & Alex’s ‘Daníell In The Sea’ and Teebs’ ‘Verbena Tea’ with Rebekah Raff, with its seductive harp strumming. Let...

Benno Blome Ft. Big Bully - Moving Free - (Artreform)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
Ukrainian label Artreform has welcomed a host of big names over the years, with Benno Blome just one of those individuals. The German is renowned for his on-point and consistent way of working, and such traits were definitely showcased on his Moving Free EP on Artreform. So how better to pay homage to the merits of the original than to release a remix package of the original? The label seem to agree, and so it is here that we’re introduced to a whole new way of looking at Blome’s succinct origin...

Alpha Function - Il.Legacy - (Ampispazi Recordings)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
Ampispazi Records is the Berlin based label ran by Mik Santaro, a man who evidently has his finger on the pulse when it comes to unleashing excellent electronic music on us. The label’s latest is a similarly excellent effort in that regard, as he introduces us to the sounds of Alpha Function, for whom the largely excellent Il. Legacy EP marks their first foray into the world of production. And as auspicious starts go, this one’s right up there. Almost minimal in texture but still boasting its o...

Sonny Fodera & Gene Farris - We Work It - (Visionquest)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
Sonny Fodera is very much a mordent hose champion with lots of EPs, LPs and mxi albums under his belt already. He likes to collaborate, too, and does so again here with Chicago legend Gene Farris on a new cut on Visionquest. Their original gets remixed by label founder Lee Curtiss and Freaks. In original form, We Work It is a rolling bit of deep house with spritely synths and rubbery drums. A starry night sky unfolds up top as spoken word snippets talk abut substance abuse and working it. It’s ...

Mar-T - Sake - (Celesta Recordings)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
Spanish DJ and producer Mar T is a big name in Ibiza having been resident at Amnesia there for years. As such he has a big room house sound designed to fill big spaces and sweep up thousands of dancers. Here he does that again with two new cuts for the young but auspicious label that is Celesta. He also gets remixed twice one by Jey Kermis and once by Neverdogs. Up first is Sake, the title track and a real standout affair that rolls and rolls in infectious style, Subtle but effective snare patt...

Darius Syrossian - Roush EP - (Roush)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
Roush now turn to the globally recognised house star that is the UK’s Darius Syrossian. As resident at Sankeys and Tribal Sessions and a veteran of releases on Jackathon, Im a House Gangster, Viva and Hot Creations there is little this man can’t do with his machines and this new EP proves that once again. Opening up the three track affair is Time, a tough edged, tightly coiled tech banger that will keep floors locked for days. Slick and with some nice hi hat and snare action it really is a no f...

Redondo & Bolier Ft. She Keeps Bees - Every Single Piece - (Spinnin Deep)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
If Lilly Wood and The Prick’s ‘Prayer in C’ and The Avener’s ‘Fade Out Lines’ characterized your 2014 then get ready for the replacement. Redondon & Bolier have created a laid back guitar and sax driven, folk house vocal with the sort of singalong hook that will grab you unawares when you’re behind the wheel, on the dancefloor or even in the supermarket. Prepare your excuses – it will be requested. A lot. 4 out of 5 Reviewed by Paulette     {http://soundcloud.com/spinnin-deep/...

Andreya Triana - Gold - (Ninja Tune)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
I first heard Andreya Triana’s musio on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Show when it was on Radio 1 – I bought the album. Four years later, she has a record deal with Ninja Tunes, respect from the music industry taste makers and a diary packed with live and festival appearances that would be the envy of any artist. Now there’s ‘Gold’. An Adele / Seinabo Sey reminsicent, Southern gospel sounding, happy clappy sound with a hooky ‘yeah yeah’ chorus that is immediately more commercially accessible and r...

George Maple - Talk Talk - (Virgin EMI)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
George Maple has a voice that flows like syrup on a pancake when you’ve ordered breakfast in bed in a château Parisian hotel that has beds with cloud sized pillows and unfeasibly high thread count Egyptian cotton sheets. TA-Ku takes the James Blake / Sbtrkt / Lil Silva route for his remix and delivers a glorious slice of downtempo electronica that breathes and flexes and sweats lightly in the heat. Gorgeous. Moon Boots amps up the tempo to deliver a full vocal, bouncing future house excursion wi...

False Image - Second Horizon EP - (Get Physical)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
There are times when nothing but a bit of intricate yet laconic, laidback techno will do and when those times hit, you better make sure you have a copy of False Image’s ‘Second horizon’ EP in your arsenal. ‘Second Horizon’ is a percussive treat with sticky sweet strings that melt like caramel then harden like peanut brittle whilst the tempo is driven by happy hi hats and sharp, sunray snares. Deon’t be deceived by the groove. ‘Moon Ray’ bewitches you with its lengthened minor chord shadows, synt...

Tujamo & Jacob Plant - All Night - (Fly Eye)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
What a refreshing change to hear someone actually testing the limits of their chosen genre again.Tujamo & Jacob Plant join forces for a skanking, soars like a rocket, drops like a bomb riotous romp. Its dramatic almost classical intro builds with frenetic snares and whooshing synths, descends into a smooth reggae toasted vocal that skanks and grooves like your favourite uncle, then jumps up and pogos like your errant nephew. It’s great fun and deserves to be a Beatport nimber 1. It’s a club ...

Promise Land - Why I Still Love You - (Size Records)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
If you feel like a naughty school kid anywhere near a chemistry lab, then Promise Land ‘Why I Still Love You’ will have you twiddling the ends of your mad scientist moustache. It’s explosive in that over-brimming heavy metal to acid combination and it bangs as hard as a controlled suitcase explosion in the car park of any airport. It gets a little bit baggy when the vocodered vocal filters through but all is forgiven when it snaps back and jumps back fully into the fray. Rocking. 3.5 out of 5 ...

DJ SKT Ft. Rae - Take Me Away - (Azuli)

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
A firm favourite with Radio 1 and 1Xtra glitterati, DJ S.K.T revisits the old Jomanda classic with a rolling bass rewiring of Katherine E’s old skool rave classic ‘Take Me Away’. It’s a bamboo hit, jelly belly bassline and sand box shuffle special lifted by Rae’s hydraulic vocal that is bound to herald in the outdoor party season from Miami onwards like the first bluebird of Spring. It’s like the sunshine never went away. 4 out of 5 Reviewed by Paulette     {http://soundcloud.com/...

Thursday, 26 February 2015 House
Toronto’s Demuir joins DJ Sneak’s I’m A House Gangster camp, marking their first release of the year! ‘Past To Present EP’ opens with the incessantly jackin’ ‘Whatchuwhoooooant?!’, hot with a twisted bassline and moody spoken word. Jazz fused licks bubble over a groove on ‘Drama Untied, that comes with a powerful vocal message that call’s upon all of us to recognise ourselves as one. Finishing off this great package from Demuir, ‘The Cheerleader’ is a funk fuelled gem with a soulful, popping bas...
