Cosmic Cowboys - Perseus - (Time Has Changed)

Monday, 29 June 2015 House
We’ve profiled the Time Has Changed label on these pages many times, long ago marking them out back then as a label of real distinction. The music on their latest comes from a relatively unknown quantity in Cosmic Cowboys, an Italian duo from Venice no less. A release that could well go down as the imprint’s best for some time, it’s got more than enough in its locker to suggest it’ll leave an impression wherever it’s let out of its cage. The title track, in original form at least, maintains a r...

Monkey Brothers - Facades EP

Monday, 29 June 2015 House
We get off to a flyer thanks to the work of the title track, ‘’Facades’’. A bit weird but also a bit wonderful, it serves up a wonderful voyage through the cosmos that’s littered with intriguing tidbits. The female spoken-word vocal gives it a really unique voice, whereas the momentum of the skipping beats help it soar even further. Kiki’s remix drags it kicking and screaming further in the direction of the ‘floor, but for us, it’s hard to go against the original. ‘Front View’ reminds us that t...

Alexic Rod - InComing - (Dichotomic)

Monday, 29 June 2015 House
Opening up the account is InComing. This one is a squelchy, bubbly house number with groaning synths, sweeping pads and bobbling drums that cannot fail to engage dancers from start to finish. The second cut is a more neon lit, rippling techno track with progressive ideas and some very well programmed drums and melodies. This is a fine way to mint your new label and the two tracks offered up prove Rod can make any sort of music with equally compelling results. If you are a breakbeat fan then you...

Larry Peters & UMHO incl. Miguel Lobo, Daniele Casa - Character EP - (eMBi Music Limited)

Monday, 29 June 2015 House
Chilean DJ/producer Larry Peters has led a long and chequered history in the dance music domain, with many an expert label picking up on his talents over the years. His most recent endeavours see him turn his hand to producing for the eMBI Music Ltd imprint (the sister label of eMBI) - And the early signs would seem to suggest that he’s very much on the money once again here. The four-tracker starts off with the title-tack, Character’, which is a potent partystarter that makes sumptuous use of s...

Ryan Crosson - On The Rise EP - (Visionquest)

Monday, 29 June 2015 House
The action gets underway thanks to the ethereal and hypnotic strands of ‘Cadets in Heat’. Full of foreboding motifs and intricate glares, it’s the sound of a producer who’s not afraid to mix it up once in a while. Title track ‘On the Rise’ is a spiky and unwavering piece of high-end tech house, whereas the curtain call, ‘D!!!’ (perhaps a homage to the producer’s hometown?) is more concerned with abrasive percussion and in-your-face vibes. All things told, this is very classy stuff indeed. If in...

Marc Miroir - Let Me Go - (Remixes)

Monday, 29 June 2015 House
The first of these comes from NYC house don, Fred P, a man who needs no introduction to fans of classy house music in particular. Fred’s mix is just as you’d imagine: deep and classy, even though it’s actually more uptempo than we figured it might be. He draws on Bicer’s vocals only occasionally, but it’s the flair by which he adds the drums and manipulates the synths that really stand out and capture the imagination. Leo Cubanero’s mix takes a more direct approach, as he settles on a sound that...

Dusky - Skin Deep - (17 Steps)

Thursday, 25 June 2015 House
Premiered as ‘Essential New Tune’ by Danny Howard, ‘Skin Deep’ is a nu-house bouncer with a bassline that drops like an anchor in the ocean. The looped lyric ‘you make you wanna turnaround, you make you wanna oooh’ is like a clarion call to the handbag circling massive and if the girls are on the floor, the boys will not be far behind. You’ll hear it blazing from the speakers of Citroen C2’s all summer. 3 out of 5 Reviewed by Paulette     {http://soundcloud.com/duskymusic/skin-dee...

Disclosure Ft. Gregory Porter - Holding On (Gus Pirelli VIP) - (PMR / Island)

Thursday, 25 June 2015 House
As if Disclosure’s ‘Holding On’ has not been raved about enough, the Gus Pirelli remix that set their Facebook, website and the blogs that matter alight is now ready for release and what a dazzling disco ball it is. It’s got a growling bass guitar groove and a shiny, reflective top end that makes mirrored shades, turned up skinnies and espadrilles mandatory. It reminds me of Soft House Company’s ‘What I Need’ in the bassline region but it’s a slo-mo disco dance off that will kick up more sand th...

Robyn & La Bagatelle Magique Ft. Maluca - Love Is Free - (Koniichiwa)

Thursday, 25 June 2015 House
Robyn is back with a beat banging, electro breaks booty bouncer that has already bagged Annie Mac’s ‘Best Single In the World’ accolade. It fits perfectly with all things Major Lazer, MO, Elliphant, Princess Superstar and Peaches. It’s rapped not sung, reminds me of very early Beastie Boys and is all about the outsized jewellery, crossed arms posturing, a huge roll of lino and a cowbell or two. Definitely one for the student union bar. 3 out of 5 Reviewed by Paulette     {http://s...

Faithless 2.0 - Tarantula (Booka Shade) - (Atlantic)

Thursday, 25 June 2015 House
Acid house is certainly growing up. 7 albums and millions of album sales later, the mighty Faithless are celebrating their 20 years in the business with a remix album called Faithless 2.0 (of course) that features remixes from some of the great and good in every genre – from Avicii to Claptone to Tiesto to Rudimental to Flux Pavilion to … just about everyone worth their headphones, studio seat and usb stick. First up, my favourite Frankfurters, Booka Shade, take on the sprawling ‘Tarantula’ and ...

Alina Baraz & Galimatias - Fantasy - (Full Hundred)

Thursday, 25 June 2015 House
I love me a bit of dream pop and Alina Baraz’s ‘Fantasy’ takes that template, adds some old skool funk pianos and glissando keys a la George Duke, raindrop synths, disco strings, breeze on a blade of grass percussion and a groove that could make even your grandparents start slow dancing, and a whispered vocal that is more enticing than high thread count egyptian cotton sheets. Add Pomo’s click-track and off-beat twitch dreamscape and Felix Jaehn’s uptempo and vibrant, tropical house work out and...

Stromae - Carmen (Handsome Habibi Remix) - (Vangarde Music)

Thursday, 25 June 2015 House
I make no secret of how much I like Stromae – his particular brand of clipped french spoken word / rap layered over an impressive array of musical styles has earned him a loyal following and constant radio playlisting for practically the last decade. ‘Carmen’ takes Bizet’s opera classic and raves it up with whip-cracking beats and rave synths. It’s an encore track par excellence and proves once again that Stromae is definitely the best thing to come out of Belgium since moules et frites avec may...

Kije Manito - Majestaju EP - (White Label)

Thursday, 25 June 2015 House
Fans of downtempo, cleverly crafted electronica will be enraptured by Kije Manito’s brand of slick and shimmering, glitchy dance floor slowburners. Imagine my joy to find out that young Kije found inspiration to produce from his days as a regular on my Parisian dancefloors. Now’s my chance to return the compliment. Majestaju is a lazy shoeless shuffler with a Turkish clarinet driven melody and jittery synths that makes me want to open the windows and blast the neighbourhood with its gorgeousness...

Julio Bashmore - Holding On Ft. Sam Dew - (Boardwalk)

Thursday, 25 June 2015 House
Scraped, looped disco strings and a looped Nile Rodgers sounding guitar lick provide the groove whilst Sam Dew’s voice provides the goosebumps to Julio Bashmore’s latest funky jam ‘Holding On’. It’s like the best of 70’s boogie with its backing vocal harmonies and arrangements, velveteen organ keys and an MMXXV beat driven sensibility. It’s catchy too. I’ve roadtested it for the last week on this fair island and guess what? It kicks ass. Did I say it’s a chart hit incoming? Didn’t think I needed...

Rudimental - Rumour Mill Ft. Anne Marie & Will Heard - (Big Beat)

Thursday, 25 June 2015 House
Rudimental hit us for six with a choice rolling deep house crossover vocal duet with a raw and plucky double bass, a suede covered kick and a playful vocal interplay that effortlessly seduces the ear. There’s a sexy brass break that takes it soaring and the second half descends via the vocal loop into club banger territory. It’s strong as it is but I’m greedy. Can’t wait to hear the remixes that are bound to follow. So I’m a Rudimental fan. So shoot me. 4 out of 5 Reviewed by Paulette  ...

Not before time, Deep House don and label co-owner, Pete Dafeet delivers his brilliant debut album, which sadly marks the end of Lost My Dog Records after 10 years of quality goodness! Going out with a bang, 'The Root The Soul' is clever, profound and sentimental. It carries a fusion of profound Deep House-scapes, soulful melodies brushed with colourful intricate Tech, underpinned by lush, bumping grooves that are ripe for both dance-floors and sofas alike! Highlights include Pete’s affectionate...

Harry Romero and Joeski (aka HR & SKI) get their Jazz freak on, delivering a quirky 2 track EP aimed squarely at the dancers! Armed with a fierce jackin' sway, 'Ghetto Bounce' comes decorated with cool Jazz licks and breaks down to a sublime drum solo, before bringing back the groove. Armed with a large dose of the usual Vegas humour, 'Toot Toot (Beak Beak Mix)' toys with Donna Summer's 'Bad Girls' classic vocal hook. Vegas launches into an infectious Discofied Hi NRG bass hook, surrounded by bubbling synth hooks, dramatic breakdowns and backed with some meaty beat science to decimate the dance floor!
