Ricardo Tobar - Collection - (Cocoon)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 Albums
This is a really intriguing album. Chilean producer Ricardo Tobar clearly knows his dance music history but if anything he’s used that knowledge to make sure he creates something with a highly original approach. There is a wide range of percussive music here, some of it Latin-infused but all of it creating energy and good feeling. Tobar also uses some field recordings so that the sound picture pans out on occasion, which works really well in the start of a track like ‘There Is Pop’, which turns ...

Jamie XX - In Colour - (Young Turks)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 Albums
The hotly awaited solo album from Jamie XX is here – and I’m pleased to say it is already setting itself up as one of the records to own this summer. This is because of his feel good approach to music, celebrating different cultures, styles and rhythms in a wonderful patchwork of ideas. Although it has a couple of inconsistent tracks, ‘In Colour’ has too many uplifting moments to get preoccupied with the detail. Jamie’s XX band mate Romy Madley Croft guests on the wonderful ‘Loud Places’, with i...

Mennie - H.A.P.P.Y - (Exploited Ghetto)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
Don’t let ‘H.A.P.P.Y’s intro beats fool you, the keys glisten like raindrops on a blade of grass wavering on a synth and hot breath created breeze. It’ll put you in mind of long drives, picnics and barbecues so don’t forget the carbon, sausages or freshly chilled champagne and strawberries. ‘Harringbone’ is a late night jam, all thudding beats, slap happy claps and bass line drop that could leave a hole in a concrete floor. Heads down then. 3 out of 5 Reviewed by Paulette     {htt...

Junior Jack - E-Samba (Christoph Remix) - (Pias)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
Rewind to 2003 and E-Samba was the sound of the summer gathering plaudits around the globe for its football / brazilian chanted samba magic. Now Christoph has given it the smooth, deep house arpeggiated once over it is ready to mine the underground. It’s a bleepy synth excursion with iron filings bouncing in the snares and hi hats that takes a good three and a half minutes to kick in but when the bass drops at the midway point you know there will be much one fingered dancing and waving of both w...

Denney - Low Frequency - (Ministry Of Sound)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
Hot Creations’ rising star and past Mixmag Future Hero Denney more than delivers with ‘Low Frequency’ his phat, ghetto-house booty bouncer. If you like Amine Edge & Dance, Shiba San and all things that make the walls shake with that bass, this will please you no end with its electro b-boy posturing. I can’t get Technotronic out of my head but I’m sure that’s purely unintentional. Add to cart. 4 out of 5 Reviewed by Paulette     {http://soundcloud.com/hot-creations/denney-low-f...

Fink - Fall Into The Light (Remix EP) - (R'Coupd)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
At risk of sounding like a string pull, Fink appreciation doll, here is ‘Fall Into The Light’ the latest release from the Horizontalism album. In its original form it is a sexy downtempo folk soul seduction with strummed guitars, sullen synths and impeccable timing. IN keeping with the Horizontalism deconstruction theme, there are remixes now from Deadbeat which takes it on a haunting, dubby and dissonant metallic foundry hit driven adventure. Margaret Dygas strips it down for a vocal free, KY j...

Soul Circuit - Rolling With Me Ft. Maverick Sabre - (The Full Hundred)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
Soulful house doesn’t come much better than Soul Circuit’s swirling deep house excursion ‘Rolling With Me’. Maverick Sabre’s voice takes the lead, powering it with funk force and bromance fuelled, heart wrought emotion. ‘I’ve got love for the homies that be rolling with me’ he sings – and you want to be one of them, even if it means a sex change. Indeed. The bottom end will over blaze your speakers in places but I’m not mad at them. It’s a good track and a good collaboration. 3 out of 5 Review...

Tazer - Wet Dollars - (Black Butter)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
If you like it dark and clicky with a b-boy electro rhythmic pulse then Tazer’s ‘Wet Dollars’ is a lino dance off extraordinaire. Close the curtains, hit the strobes and play it loud. It goes … 3.5 out of 5 Reviewed by Paulette       ...

Ephemerals - Life Is Good (Chicky Boom Remix) - (Jalapeno Records)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
Breaks, nu garage, nu two step, nu broken beat, a genre by any other name is just as sweet and The Ephemerals’ ‘Life Is Good’ is good no matter which way you look at it. Chicky Boom’s remix takes it the warm, wavering synths, lightly plucked guitar and crisp beats broken like cracknel with a hammer in a master confectioner’s. The drop deserves a rewind every time and the groove is dancefloor catnip. With are as varied and far reaching as Gilles Peterson, Craig Charles, Groove Armada, DJ Target o...

Kevin Over - Retrovision Pt. 2 - (Noir Music)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
If you like relentless and unforgiving techno / tech house than Kevin Over is your man. ‘Delta Disorder’ is a gruff and growling, hard stepper that pounds your senses like a porn star on overtime. ‘Boxer’ is an uppercut, body blow, on the ropes affair that sweetens the beating with some sweet synth washes, high pitched, looped bells and death knell pads. ‘Mash’ is a ‘take me to your leader’ truth serum that goes for the tech funk jugular with its monster synth-stab and 303 acid groove that is fr...

Ane Brun Vs NuDisorder - One Last Try (Addal Remix) - (Armada Deep)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
This is one of those records that makes you feel the sand between your toes even under an umbrella in the middle of a Mancunian torrential downpour. Ane Brun ‘One Last Try’ has a quirky yet smooth, folk vocal and emotive piano chords and melody that seduce your ear like whispered, stolen sweet nothings in a crowded room. And when the lyric is left bare ‘and even if a butterfly lives a 100 years, you and me, will still be the same, will be the same’ – you’re not sure whether your heart has just b...

St. Germain - Real Blues EP - (Warner / Big Beat)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
It’s been a while since St Germain graced my headphones with his brand of world music and blues blended with slo mo deep house, but here he is with ‘Real Blues EP’ and as expected, it’s a sprawling, Americana tinged beauty. IN the instrumentation african township notes blend with blue grass plucked guitar, featherlight glockenspiel and bamboo hits. The beats tickle your feet with their twitchy syncopation whilst the vocal has the ad libbed blues moan and drawl down to a t. Can’t wait to play thi...

John Monkman Ft. Morgan Mackintosh - Over We Go - (Armada Deep)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
So as we enter the season of all things outdoor, scorching and refreshing, here is a relief that ticks all three boxes and more. ‘Over We Go’ is a dissonant, hypnotic indie-vocalled treat with a bottom end that dissipates like a mushroom cloud to annihilate the dancefloor. It’s got Ibiza terrace written all over it. 4 out of 5 Reviewed by Paulette       ...

Keita Sano - Flowers From Your Grave EP – (Holic Trax)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
So ok ‘Flowers From Your Grave’ feels like you’re lost sometime in the late eighties somewhere in Chicago, or there about. But if you can handle that notion then this plays like a first rate homage to the era with crisp bass and raw-edged drum machines lending this excitable production a reassured authenticity. Besides that, it’s kick-ass. ‘Lets Stay Together’ then reworks more soulful sounds by twisting them around shuffling percussion repeating until distraction. Next, ‘Night Walking’ gets the...

Ben Hoo - Breathe EP – (Ovum Recordings)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
From the opening notes of ‘Breathe’ you can tell there is a musical mind at play behind the artfully chosen chords. Matters only become more intensified with the introduction of the icy cool, sensuously breathy vocals delivered by Karen Gibson Roc that add zest to this production, amid the pulsating electronic beats and hypnotic atmospheric synths swirling around the stereo. To confirm those notions is the final track,’ 561595’ with its series of classically attuned piano hits and twisting, tens...

Makcim & Levi – More Lettuce EP – (Apollonia)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
The latest release on the label continues the theme of deep, down and sometimes dirty music that not only sounds refreshingly contemporary but thoroughly compulsive. Opening with the title track, ‘More Lettuce’ builds upon probing bass and insistent drums with occasional drops and sound fx added into the mix across almost eight minutes. Next the excellent ‘Tegel’ gets deeper with warmer keys and a creative array of playful sounds and events, while ‘Thaiman’ injects funkier vibes into its undulat...

Dino Lenny & Doorly - The Magic Room EP – (Fine Human Records)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
Originally appearing last year under an anagram this has now been refreshed and reactivated alongside Doorly on Lenny’s own very Fine Human imprint. The original production hits target from the get go via its repetitive and succinctly addictive bassline offset by yearning piano chords and vocals that spell out a compelling narrative. Doorly’s ‘Re-Chunk’ version retains the bass and vocal while adding in cutting stabs, as third version from The Deepshakerz re imagines it all via rough and ready b...

Maurice Aymard & Sasse Backwards EP (Incl. Massimiliano Pagliara & Luvless Remixes)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
As the last decade entered it's business end, Finnish beatsmith Sasse was making the kind of lush deep house and soulful techno which helped bring European dance music to the dominating grooves of underground dance. Now seven or eight years later that refinement and sonic sophistication is still in evidence, exemplified brilliantly by this collaboration with Maurice Aynard which scores highly on charm, sophistication and elegance. The original of the title track is the best of the two versions o...

Easy Kid - 'Yo Mamma' - (Depaart)

Thursday, 28 May 2015 House
The always refreshing Depaart label now turns to a hot Spanish pair for their next EP. The artists behind the music are Guillermo Marraco and Pablo Sainz de Robles, aka Easy Kid, a duo that have seen plenty of success before now on labels like Southbeat and Spring Tube. What they offer up here are two fine versions of a house track with a remix from Georgeous. Yo Mamma in original form is the sort of fulsome house track that really makes people sweaty. It has swollen bass, well driven kicks and...

Various Artists - DJ Kicks: Actress - (!K7)

Thursday, 21 May 2015 Compilations
There is an appealing roughness to this mix from Actress, his first commercial compilation. He is more than happy for a few bumps and knocks to remain between tracks, and not beyond shifting the tempo quite a bit in one go. This gives the music a more ‘human’ element as it unwinds. It works, too, because this is an imaginative mix with a few curveballs from the likes of Autechre and Shit and Shine, and a dancefloor killer from Chez N Trent. Around these Cunningham doesn’t let his listener settle...
