This is the first album from San Francisco-based producers 40 Thieves, and through it they harness the spirit of the city. There is definitely something of the Haight Ashbury area in tracks like ‘List Of Two’, a perfectly paced bit of modern space funk that is both relaxed and uplifting, hitting a satisfying groove. ‘Outer Mission’ is a really good sweeping track, and ‘JP Soul’ a very well-constructed, slower piece of loping disco – while ‘Rhythm Queen’ is a bit more sultry, and ‘Les Planetes’ and ‘Carousel’ offer more deadpan electropop. You’ll gather from this there is a good deal of variety on this highly enjoyable first album, which comes into its own in the sunny weather! As a consequence it’s well worth investigating.
