A Guy Called Gerald
Tonic Jazz: The Berlin Sessions
Laboratory Instinct

This feels like a traditional techno album – by which I mean the analogue sounds, the careful attention to detail without overproducing and the warm, lush sounds of some of the keyboard pads A Guy Called Gerald uses. This is a follow up to the Proto Acid album, with each track self contained and beautifully arranged. ‘Iland’ combines a closed-in keyboard loop with more restless percussion, while the sparse but eerie ‘Just Soul’ balances a piercing string line gliding over a warm bass. The whole thing is put together with such assurance and intimacy that it works perfectly as a late night / early morning listen, preferably on headphones. One of Britain’s finest techno talents, reasserting his lofty position.
