It is a lifetime since Bernd Kunz’s last long playing release, ‘Mellowdramatic’, which was in 1997. That was a lot slower than the music he makes now, which takes elements of hip hop but crafts some deliciously dark, often deep house as the end result. ‘Suite For B-Boy’ is one of the best tracks to fuse the two elements, but ‘And You Know’, featuring Geraldine Roth, is a complete winner, the loop from the singer stretching from the poolside to the middle of the dancefloor. It’s clear a lot of time has been spent on structuring the album, because the way Kunz eases us in with the sultry ‘Because Of…’ and ‘A Tribute’ sets him up perfectly for unleashing the tougher, streetwise beat of ‘All My Lovin’’. As with all releases from this label there is class in abundance where production is concerned. Let’s just hope he doesn’t leave it so long until the next one!
