Strut has carved an impeccable name for compilations and now moves into new studio projects with the Inspiration Information series which brings artists together with their musical heroes for one-off collaborations. First off is a sublime mating between Jamaican session legends Sly and Robbie and inimitable Detroit soul maverick Amp Fiddler, whose P-Funk pedigree struck a chord with the Jamaican Riddim Kings resulting in instant spontaneous combustion when the two camps entered Jamaica’s Anchor studios. The combination of Amp’s sweetly-melodic vocals and the veteran duo’s subtly-incisive grooves could indeed be a marriage made in heaven, able to veer from 80s Compass Point dub-funk to choral P-Funk balladeering like they’d been playing together for years. While writing new songs in the studio, the trio also revisited George Clinton’s ‘Paint The White House Black’ [as ‘Blackhouse’] and a couple from Amp’s back catalogue. A classic case of diverse musical cross-pollination spawning something new and thrilling.
