Not a typo, before you ask. Autechre’s eigth full-length release for Warp displays a subtle sense of humour that’s not restricted to just wordplay, with possibly their most accessible work to date. For one, it finds Autechre happy to display their influences. Acts as diverse as Aux 88, Herbie Hancock, Grandmaster Flash, even Miles Davis and Sly Stone can be found lurking within, haunting Autechre’s signature hyper-kinetic time sequences and intense soundscapes. Plus, the marathon beatfest “Sublimit” and playful “Fermium” prove what fans have known from the off – these guys have got funk, plain and simple. They just use a different way to express it to most, and it’s this commitment to creativity that sets them worlds apart from everyone else. Okay, so you won’t be won over if you’re not already a fan, and you suspect Autechre really don’t mind. Either way, they’ll probably just carry on regardless, which can only be a good thing.
