Dan Snaith’s latest opus arrives with a lot of hype from pre-release reviews – which I can now add to by confirming it as probably his best record to date. There is a warmth running through the album that brings to mind Metronomy’s ‘English Riviera’, though ‘Our Love’ is a lot more electronic in its focus. ‘Can’t Do Without You’ is an irresistible opener, its hook building to an unstoppable peak, while the vocal contributions of Jessy Lanza and Owen Pallett complement his own slightly soulful voice really nicely. Despite the warmth there is still a subtle edge behind a lot of the music, which retains the nervous energy of previous outings in beats and bass. Caribou is subtly progressing to a more song-based approach but without turning his back on the previous style that served him so well. ‘Our Love’ dazzles and charms in equal measure, and has both the songs and hooks to sustain a long and happy shelf life!
