It makes a change to report of a major label keeping faith with one of its electronic acts, and that’s just what Virgin have done with Cassius. Their third album is more structured than 2003’s Au Reve, and goes straight for the jugular with the sparse garage setting of ‘Toop Toop’. A myriad of influences pack the music but don’t overwhelm it, so the elements of 80s funk, soul and rock that Cassius include go perfectly with a more house-based approach. A couple of excellent club cuts near the end round things off, but the most striking track of all is ‘Eye Water’, where Pharrell Williams guests in an emotional plea for better use of the planet. Sounds cliched, but works a treat – and crowns an outstanding album.
