Common
ThisIsMeThen – The Best Of 1992-1997
Sony BMG

For anyone wanting an introduction to one of the finest talents hip hop has to offer, this is a great starting point. The Chicago rapper has consistently brought lyrical insight to the table where his music is concerned, something this collection illustrates in all its finery. The scratchy ‘Soul By The Pound’, the light put-downs of ‘Heidi Hoe’, the languid guitar of ‘I Used To Love HER’ – all are highlights of Common doing his own thing, while collaborations with Erykah Badu (‘All Night Long’), Cee-Lo (‘GOD’) and in particular Lauryn Hill (the probing ‘Retrospect For Life’) are strongly rewarding.
