You never get anything less than lyrical invention from Dan Le Sac and Scroobius Pip, though you sense at the same time this second album will decide their fate. Sometimes it feels like listening to a pumped up version of the Streets, and the social preaching can wear a little thin, no matter how laudable. ‘Great Britain’ is a case in point, with its chorus going, “I’m from a little place called Great Britain, I dunno if I love or hate Britain”. On the other hand, when Scroobius is speaking out against knife crime, you want to amplify his words and blast them out on street corners. It’s a fine balance, and the duo largely succeed in making it, against a cauldron of beats and influences that sit well together, reflecting an inclusive approach to genres and cultures. Sometimes the attempt to be modern wordsmiths falls a bit flat, but more often than not the message comes through, and provides a fair bit of entertainment while it’s being said.
