Darondo Pulliam is something of a Bay Area cult figure, and a listen to this collection of early 70s ‘A’ and ‘B’ sides confirms a huge talent. Now spruced up with previously missing backing vocals and guitar parts, the record is richly soulful, with elements of jazz, blues and funk around the edges. Darondo released just three singles, and all are included here, with the sexy funk of ‘Legs’, the wonderfully uplifting ‘How I Got Over’ and the dark overtones of the protest title track all testament to someone who can confidently be mentioned in the same breath as Al Green or Sly Stone.
