Deepchord – 20 Electroacoustic Soundfields – Soma

Deepchord is one of Soma’s secret weapons. Not only is he a producer of timeless soundscapes, he appears to be able to make them at remarkable speed. It only seems a few months since I was talking about ‘Sommer’, but now we have the ‘does what it says’ title of ’20 Electroacoustic Soundfields’. Of these, ‘Driftwood’ proves to be a lovely, wide angle soundscape to dive into, while the stretched-out ‘Aerosphere’ has a nice chugging beat and windswept feel. Most of the tracks dispense with beats though, preferring to concentrate on creating atmospherics. This is typical of Deepchord, who is able to make music that sounds like the weather, so that when his record finishes you could swear you have rain blowing on your face. With that in mind, this album is definitely best experienced on headphones or the widest of surround sound. Then you’ll really need a towel at the ready!
