DMX CREW
COLLAPSE OF THE WAVE FUNCTION VOLUME 4/5
REPHLEX

There is some deep theorising about sound wave functions accompanying Ed DMX’s latest outing after his nine years on the Aphex Twin’s label. All good but does it cut the mustard? It’s certainly interesting, occasionally intoxicating in its sonic explorations and does manage to inject some vital humour into the Quantum Physics lessons. Probably the most obvious comparisons would be Moroder and Kraftwerk, especially on the first record. Obviously, electro is another easy option. ‘Reverse Tachyon Beam’ is a typical track title. Then the second disc gets underway with ‘William the Conqueror’, which comes on like the Human League giving a London bus tour in Norman times! Then it’s back to Moroder-plus-blips and tracks with names like ‘Brain Location Service’. ‘Can they help me find mine?’ Ed writes in the notes. If the listener was expected to delve into this with chin-stroking earnest, it would be Fast Show material but, approached in the right spirit, it’s a sometimes fascinating ride through the cerebral universe. Or something.
