Echaskech – Origin – Just Music

After ‘Skechbook’ and ‘Shatterproof’ comes ‘Origin’, the third album from Andy Gillham and Dom Hoare – and it is a mighty piece of work. The sonic scale of this music is massive, rewarding those with wide screen sound, which fully communicates the pair’s ambition. As the drums roll and the bass lines boom it is the almost classical structure of the album that really impresses, each track part of a larger scale journey with peaks and dips, suggesting Echaskech have put a lot of thought into this. There is extra trimming, too, in the form of field recordings and a well-judged blend of analogue and digital that keeps the music living and breathing. This has all helped to fire their own signature sound, with crunched up beats that sound great on ‘Ash Fallen’, rolling drums that give ‘Telomere’ a powerful kick and the ability to build textures up steadily, which comes through best on ‘Enomie’. This is also extremely emotional music, saying more in a few notes than others do in a few hundred words. The first two albums were good – but ‘Origin’ is great, setting a new bar for this hugely impressive duo.
