The ever excellent and ever versatile Fat Freddys Drop return to keep our musical summer bubbling along nicely. This new record may only have nine tracks, but it’s most impressive to see how each holds the attention, despite being seven or eight minutes long, the record as a whole moving through an unprecedented array of styles without ever sounding contrived. The effortless reggae of the unifying ‘The Raft’ is a high point, as is the deep, twisting house applied to ‘Shiverman’. The final ‘Breakthrough’, meanwhile, is an initially soothing groove before its brassy undertones subtly lift the listener – an effect that applies to pretty much every cut here. Vocals are good – lyrics too – which helps to make ‘Dr Boondigga’ capable of uplifting many a late summer day, working its subtle magic.
