Ferry Corsten – ‘Wknd’ – (New State Music)

You have to admire Ferry Corsten’s longevity where trance music is concerned – and he has of course been making artist albums since 2003, a considerable achievement in a genre that tends towards mix compilations rather than straight long players. ‘WKND’ drifts in attractively, before hitting the floor with a vengeance with the riff that powers ‘Feel It’ – vintage Corsten, this. What he also gets right is the balance between vocal and instrumental tracks, using his experience to structure the album into a series of peaks and troughs – just like you’d have on the dancefloor. As a result the highs – ‘Love Will’, featuring Duane Harden, for instance – mix well with the darker ones – ‘Brute’, for example – to make a strong, convincing whole. On this evidence the Dutchman is still riding high, and deserves all the plaudits he gets for another fine piece of work.
