Greyboy
15 Years Of West Coast Cool
Ubiquity

The title says it all, as Ubiquity celebrate a decade and a half of one of their finest acts – the first, in fact, to sign for the San Francisco label, and one of the first American artists to look properly at the possibilities of mixing hip hop and jazz. This collection shows how well that fusion works, while supplying fans with previously unreleased material. Instrumental tracks such as ‘Panacea’ stand out for their clever workings of jazz-based riffs, while vocalists Sharon Jones, Quantic, Shawn Lee and Bart Davenport are the guests, the latter on Greyboy’s rather fine cover of Stevie Wonder’s ‘To Know You Is To Love You’. With saxophone and flute high in the mix Greyboy’s sound is fresh and vital, and when complemented with a sure rhythmic touch you can see why Ubiquity continue to hold him in such high regard.
