Kick back for a drink, as Hatchback – AKA California’s Samuel Milton Grawe – isn’t going anywhere in a hurry. With a name like Hatchback you’ll guess right if you interpret that as an ’80s throwback – I bet he drives a Peugeot 205 with tunes like the effortlessly cool ‘Jetlag’, perfectly weighted and produced and lightly funky with it. Using vintage synthesizers he easily recreates the sound of the period for an album that makes light listening but is never too soft. Sometimes the influences of the era become a bit too much, and the music strays towards soft rock, but mostly this is good humoured, funky music perfect to accompany that cruise down the Pacific Coast Highway.
