Heritage Orchestra Ft. DJ Yoda
G. Prokofiev Concerto For Turntables & Orchestra
Nonclassical

Chances are, you probably wouldn’t be challenged if you stated classical and hip-hop are not obvious musical bedmates.  Producer Will Dutta felt differently, however, and brought together Gabriel Prokofiev and DJ Yoda, to work on a piece which would explore the concept of a turntable through the premise of a concerto, the orchestra and the dj working together as one.  It’s certainly an interesting concept, particularly the notion of an orchestra trying to recreate the turntablists sounds through music (‘scratch’, ‘crab’, etc).  However, where it fails slightly is that turntablism is generally best appreciated in a live environment, particularly if it’s using unfamilar musical elements.  Live, there’s the immediacy of the crowd reaction, the inter-action, and the obvious visual element to hook you in.  Solely as a listening experience, this comes across as way too studied and dry.  If you get the opportunity to catch it live, it’s definitely worth a shot.
